When an MMO becomes a backdrop for a pickup truck add run two Sunday night football games in a row, the world as in fact turned upside down.

I weep for my little piece of nerdvana that the internet was 15 years ago.

What hast thou become!

Plan9 11-19-2007 02:14 PM

I could swear Cynthetiq posted this somewhere.

I'm having Tacoma double-vision.

I miss Gopher on the blue screen.

Halx 11-19-2007 07:09 PM

Did you miss the South Park WoW episode or something? I don't think its too remarkable; WoW is the one game out there that can attract nerds and non-nerds alike. I met my wife while playing WoW and she's no nerd. So, I don't think the commercial violates the sanctity of nerdiness. Rather, I venture that all those new sitcoms and nerd dramas that are popping up about geeks are more atrocious.

Oh but Southpark still qualifies as nerdome.

This was Sunday night football.

Its now officially mainstream.

blahblah454 11-19-2007 07:27 PM

That doesn't make me want to buy anything.

casual user 11-19-2007 07:27 PM

i know i've seen some other commercial with WOW or something very WOW-ish on it, but for the life of me i can't remember what it was

Redlemon 11-20-2007 06:49 AM

I read somewhere recently that there are more people in the US who play WoW than are farmers. So much for the stereotypical "real American".

Agriculture? Manual labor?! You can't expect Americans do that stuff anymore. Only white people I've seen use a shovel in my lifetime are those in the US Army. Only a small percentage of them could guess what a troll shaman does...

...

Okay, so I used to play Star Wars Galaxies when it first came out, but not being a nerdy 15 year old and not having 8+ hours a day to devote to grinding a profession and killing small creatures to level up made it about as fun as slamming the last few pieces in a Tetris board. MMORPGs: The new social pacification drug.

If anything, this ad makes me *not* want to buy a Tacoma.

I hate WoW.

ratbastid 11-20-2007 07:56 AM

Okay, but at least those of us who get the Leeroy Jenkins reference can snicker quietly to ourselves.

YES!!! I am not the only one! haha

now i know Leeroy Jenkins becuase of the video, not becuase of wow. a buddy showed me, and in ANY game that would suck..

i play wow, but only about once every other week. I have too much to do that doesnt consist of sitting in front of a computer all day..

Willravel 11-20-2007 10:32 AM

I don't like Tacomas, and now I don't want to play WoW.

Ustwo 11-20-2007 10:39 AM

The Leeroy thing was staged.

Didn't think it was funny then, less funny now.

Plan9 11-20-2007 11:28 AM

The Tacoma is a really great light duty truck, though.

Kadath 11-20-2007 12:49 PM

It's a weird ad, but that's all. And that seems to be de rigueur these days...

blahblah454 11-20-2007 12:56 PM

What the hell does a gorilla playing drums have to do with Dairy Milk Chocolate?!?

ratbastid 11-20-2007 01:23 PM

I prefer this parody of it:

While #1 appeals to my inner child, #2 appeals to my inner penis.

Clearly Dairy Milk is the candy bar of choice for Phil Collins-loving simian percussionists. I can't believe you didn't get that!

In other news, if I had a gorilla who could play drums I could win every battle of the bands ever.

Kadath 11-21-2007 05:44 AM

Aw, ratbastid's video got taken down before I could look at it.

I am fascinated by the Chocolate Drums ad. It's so absurd. The whole point of the commercial, as far as I can tell, is to be so weird that it's memorable without being offensive. To have people talk about it. Because, really, when was the last time you watched a commercial and it convinced you to buy a product? It's all about putting the product in front of you so you think about it when you go to make your choice. And that's what the truck/WoW commercial is -- it's weird and it gets your attention and you remember it when you go to buy a truck.

I don't remember who did it, but this was posted over in the WoW thread in gaming a bit ago, if that's what you were thinking of.

Summary: A hot chick in bra and panties, with the same cinematography as the original with the gorilla. Her breasts quiver as she slams the drums; there are a couple of closeups. The ad is for Wonderbra, the tagline had something to do with "two cups".

hrandani 11-22-2007 12:56 AM

gorilla ad was ten types of pure win.

It's like they have to spend the money on advertising might as well make it awesome.

dlish 11-24-2007 03:51 AM

how many unemployed kids sitting at home playing WoW are gonna have enough money to buy a pickup??

They have the money they didn't spend on women.

Most true WoW addicts I've run into though are not the 24/7 types but its work, wow, work, wow.

Indeed. Just real enough looking to be very cool. Not the song I'd have picked though.

Sure. And not slouch jobs, either. Lots of them tend to be in IT, I've found.

It's not like crack--it's more subtle than that. You have to be at least SEMI-functional to keep getting your fix.

Plan9 11-24-2007 07:31 AM

Friends don't let friends WoW.

Baraka_Guru 11-24-2007 09:01 AM

Wait a minute. Remind me again what WoW stands for? It's World of Wo0t!, right?

Plan9 11-24-2007 09:46 AM

New get-rich-quick scheme:

I'm gonna invent a new drug and call it Wowcaine or maybe Wowstacy or even Wowijuana.

...

I wish they still made the offroad Tacoma with the 4 cylinder sans gnome.

QuasiMondo 11-24-2007 11:06 AM

I should've known Toyota would pull a stunt like this.

I thought it meant Whippit Out Wednesdays, but then again, I'm an old-school Opie & Anthony fan.

That was set up and done as a WoW clan recruitment vid. IIRC, it drew in tens of thousands of join requests.

So what you're saying is that your penis is so small, its length is negative?

You haven't seen real WoW fanatics, have you? There are people who put trash bags on the floor and shit off the side of their chair so they don't have to get up and miss part of a raid.

That's pretty disgusting. Reminds me of that South Park episode. You know you've reached the bottom when you can't take 4-5 mins to take a piss or a shit so instead you do it in a 2 liter or on a trash bag.

Baraka_Guru 11-24-2007 01:51 PM

When I'm playing NWN and I have to take a piss, I just type "afk."

Then again, I play on a heavy rp server, so that's usually when we're in the middle of nowhere talking about the current problems Cormyr is having with the orcs, and that it's hindering the rebuilding of Marsember....or something along those lines, anyway.

That is crazy. But people that far gone would find some other addiction if there was no WoW.

oh, and For the horde!

Shauk 11-24-2007 05:31 PM

maybe if we throw enough wow commercials at ustwo he'll die! ;p

just kidding!

Amaras 11-24-2007 06:35 PM

Anybody heard of books?
Dice rollin' D & D?
God, I am even nerdier than the rest.
But I have touched a boobie without paying for it.

Baraka_Guru 11-24-2007 06:44 PM

Books?
D&D?
Boobies?

That's everything a man needs, right there.

Plan9 11-24-2007 10:45 PM

William Shatner singing should be a special attack in the game.
