McDonald's getting healthy?

McDonald's moves to phase out the use of antibiotics
Last Updated Fri, 20 Jun 2003 6:09:44

OAK BROOK, ILL. - McDonald's is asking its meat suppliers around the world to stop using antibiotics in animals over concerns that it lessens the drugs' effectiveness for humans.

The fast food giant's new policy prohibits direct suppliers from using "medically important antibiotics" to promote growth in food animals after 2004.

Direct suppliers provide McDonald's with 70 per cent of its poultry. They will be asked to submit an annual self-certification saying they are complying with the policy.

Indirect suppliers provide the company with its beef and pork. McDonald's will offer incentives for indirect suppliers.

"McDonald's is asking producers that supply over 2.5 billion pounds of chicken, beef and pork annually to take actions that will ultimately help protect public health," Frank Muschetto, a McDonald's senior vice-president said in a statement.

Last June, McDonald's teamed up with the Environmental Defense Fund and animal pharmaceutical company Elanco Animal Health to create an antibiotics coalition.

The hope is that the policy will change the way farmers raise their animals.

However, several trade groups representing animal production, feed and health products industries said McDonald's policy is not based on science and the products slated to be phased out are safe.

At first I laughed at this story since I remembered some years ago when a large cattle operation refused to associate their reputation and sell it's beef to Mc Donald's when they found out 1 pound of meat made 25 hamburgers.

So what do you think the story is now? Are McDonald's really concerned with the health of it's patrons? Did they suddenly grow a conscience? Or is it that their bottom line is sagging and restaurants are closing that prompted this action?

Seeing how McDonalds is the only fast food place in the friggin' small town I work, and i woke up late.. I ate there today... I had the "Chicken" McNuggets. I dunno WHAT they are made of, but that meat didn't come from the land, at least not a chicken. If they are so concerned why don't they get rid of their 30 second rule. Yeah most people have a 5 second rule, McDonalds uses 30.... fix that and I just might, MIGHT think about believing this.

McDonald's is definitely starting to feel the crunch - notice the new health conscious salads etc. They're beginning to react (a little too late for me) to the change in public opinion towards them.

Because you prefer not to socialize with people named MacDonald, or people who work for people named MacDonald?

i agree with that, i would be surprized if these requestest will really change anything, they still season thier fries with beef, regardless of thier claims
last year is the first year even that it lost money over the fiscal year. They are ftrying anything, different marketing, insteed of the classic close-up shots and happy families have a great time under the good ol' arches, the ad's are more eye catching and strange. Have you seen that one for the Mcgriddle or something, the two guys in a car watching a young kid get into a space suit and blast off. They will try anything to stay on top, and with the money they are through at the problem they probably will

Ive got a pretty good idea but horror stories are always fun

Maybe McDonals will have good food by the time they become associated with "healthy" but I highly doubt that will happen during my lifetime...

McDonald's? Healthy? Never. I know they're trying to change with the times but don't think for a second that they're doing it for the sake of their customers. McDonald's has never done a single thing for the sake of their customers. If they do anything, it's to make a buck or save a buck. As their sales have declined over the last few years, they have merely taken measures to try and stop that decline. This is just one of those. If McDonald's goes healthy, it's to make money, not to stave off obesity lawsuits.
