What does "NEXT WEDNESDAY" mean to you?

My wife and I have a constant disagreement...it's been the same for the past 15yrs...

It's come down to the wonders of the internet to settle this. When I say "next Wednesday (or whatever day of the week)" I mean the very next Wednesday to come up...whether it be in two days or six days. ON THE OTHER HAND...when my wife says "Next Wednesday" she actually means...the Wednesday of next week, regardless of the day of the week we are currently in.

So...TFPer's what do you think?

Next Wednesday means skip a Wednesday to me. If I say it on Tuesday, I mean Wednesday next week. If I say it on Thursday, I mean two weeks from yesterday. Maybe it would be more helpful to look on a calender and just say the actual date. LoL

Yes.

...but a complexity: Say it's Friday, and you say "next Wednesday". I've always took that to mean "not the Wednesday coming up but the one after it." And that "this Wednesday" would mean the one coming up in 5 days.

I've always included the word 'week' between the next and the Wednesday. That way, when you say "Next week Wednesday" on a Friday, it simply means the Wednesday in the following week.

Ooh, well... On Thursday, "next Wednesday" means the Wednesday in next week, which IS the next Wednesday on the calendar. But Saturday or later, I mean "skip a Wednesday, I mean the one next week".

And if you say it on a Friday or Saturday? When is next Wesnesday on your calender? I always skip one, unless it is Wesnesday I say it on. I'd choose 'other' on your poll, but there isn't one.

Yeah, sounds about right to me. But anyway, I would hope that most, if not all, would clarify which day/date that they were talking about in this case.

I go by week. On Sunday, it's just plain "Wednesday" if it's within the same week and "Next Wednesday" is the following week. I don't say "Next Wednesday" and mean the one coming up.

And yeah, actual dates work too.....

Since I've often had experience with people confusing these kinds of references to days, I usually make it more specific when I use these terms.

Otherwise, "next XXXday" to me is what Wimpy always said to Popeye or anyone else he could con a burger out of "I'll glady pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today"

If it's important I give the date. But I tend to be literal minded; to me, 'next Wednesday' generally represents the next Wednesday, which to most people is apparently 'this coming Wednesday.'

Seems the subject is being slightly over-complicated in this thread!

The day you say it, the following week, the previous week, etc. doesn't matter at all. All that matters is reference to that specific occurance of the week.

For example: next wednesday means the wednesday after THIS wednesday, regardless of if it's "next week" or not.

So M, T, W, Th, F, Sat, Sun...any day of the week and This Wednesday is the closest Wednesday to your current day, and Next Wednesday is the wednesday following that one.

Saying "Next wednesday" is the wednesday of the next week isn't applicable in every situation; saying that next wednesday is the wednesday following the closest wednesday is applicable in every situation.

How about this???

OK OK...the votes are all counted and it looks like I am on the wrong end of the vote count.

BUT

How about this scenario...it is January 10, 2008 and you say, "Next New Years lets celebrate in Cleveland."

What year are you talking about??????? Of course you are talking about Jan 01 2009.

This is a calendar event, just like NEXT WEDNESDAY!

That is my bitch...this 'rule' about the words 'this' and 'next' isn't consistent!

I'm with you zipper.

If we say "next person to walk into the store gets a million bucks" we don't mean the person after the person who comes in soon. Maybe ask your wife what "...my next wife..." means to her.

Is there a difference in Europe/UK as opposed to how it's used in the US?
