Dlishguys' Charity Trek to Borneo Malaysia (pics updated 8/13/2007)
 

G'day guys

im back from the tfp wilderness.

its been a while since ive posted here, but life has been busy here in dubai. though i do reularly still read the posts.

as some of you guys know, a few months back now,i embarked on a Chrity Trek to Borneo, Malaysia to the top of Mt Kinabalu for Charity.

here are some photos of some of the activities we did. our trek included kayaking, cycling and walking.

it was quite a spiritual experience and quite rewarding once you do reach the summit of Mt Kinabalu, especially since physically i wasn't well for most of the trek. here are some of the photos of the trek.

im still doing my write up of the trek. thinking of possibly putting it to print.

will post it onceits done.

basically i joined a Dubai based charity organisation that organises treks. money raised during treks goes to needy children in the particular region that the challenge was undertaken.

there was a group of about 20 people..all expats here in Dubai. we donated the money to two cildrens organisations in Borneo. one that set up schools for children of workers on tea plantations who otherwise would have no access to education. they would most likel end up on the tea plantations working with their parents for the rest of their lives.

we then donated money to a childrens home for orphans. we also spent time painting their dormitories for them.

apart from the charity aspect, just knowing that your helping those less fortunate, helps spur you on when u think u cant climb that extra step when you're exhaused and have nothing left. so it was a good feeling knowing that all the effort wasnt for fun, and was actually helping people who needed it.

porters carry EVERYTHING up by hand. food supplies to the rest house are all crried up by porters because of the cheap labour.

Are those lizards harmful at all? I mean, they are huge!!

dude dlish!!! that's bad ass, and i'm quite impressed by your involvement with that effort. thanks for the pictures, and for the civic charity. makes me want to get out and go hike...for charity is even better. :thumbsup:

Kudos to you my friend! First of all, support of any charitable event is an amazing thing. Thank you! Secondly, that looks/sounds like an amazing experience. I must admit that I am a bit jealous. :) One of the greatest bits of knowledge one can gain other than self-knowledge is world-knowledge. Seeing new places, meeting new people... it's all very enlightening.

I've always felt that way to some degree, but after my time in Afghanistan, I'm sure of it. I came away with very mixed feelings about the people, but I feel very lucky that I had the experience.

At any rate, awesome! Glad you are back, safe and sound. I can't wait to see and read more about this.

blahblahs right..it was actually a year ago exactly now. ive done a tonne of travelling since, for that same reason you state...to experience the world, meet different people along the way and learn about new things i otherwise would never have known if i was sitting in my lounge chair.

doing something like this is amazing. i have very fond memories of the trip and the sense of comradere is overwhelming. ive made some great friends along the way and have no regrets as to what i have done or achieved during this trip.

i had intended on climbing kilimanjaro with the same group but unfortunately i havent been able to go for various reasons. the team got back a few days ago and i saw the pics of kili. its amazingly beautiful and i regret not going. i keep making she-lish feel bad for me not going.

im planning a charity trek with the group to peru sometime next year.. ive made a pact with 2 co-trekkers from the borneo crew that we will do machu pichu ..

of course all money that is raised goes directly to the needy. as part of the Gulf for Good organisation, there are strict policies on who gets the monies. it has to go to an organisation must then prove and show how they used that money. it cant go to individuals or to pay peoples salaries within organisations etc.

xeph i know what you mean about the afghani people. in a sense i do not blame them. they are a people mired in poverty and ignorance, without going into the politics of it. but i do understand your thoughts. the important thing about it is that you came away taking something with you, and thats what matters.
