Stepdad's sex attacks escalated: Victim

By SEAN McKIBBON, Ottawa Sun

An Ottawa man accused of threatening and repeatedly sexually and physically abusing his stepdaughter for years, claimed he had sex with her to give her experience, the alleged victim told court yesterday.

"He would tell me it was to give me experience so I knew what to do when I had a boyfriend," the 18-year-old said. "He said it was normal and that there's a lot of fathers out there that do it."

A court-ordered publication ban prevents identification of the young woman or her stepfather.

Although the stepfather, now 46, at first claimed he would stop having sex with her when she turned 16, he "kept upping it" to 17 and then 18, the girl said Vague on dates, the young woman told the court the abuse began when she reached puberty, with her stepfather coming into her bedroom with a flashlight and looking under her panties.

When she told her mother, her stepfather had an excuse.

"He said I was his daughter too and he was curious and wanted to see how I was maturing," the woman said.

Her mother questioned that response, but the man threatened to beat both of them, the girl said.

The abuse escalated to the point that the man asked the girl to touch him or watch him masturbate.

He raped her, she said, when she was 15, while on a trip to Jamaica to visit the rest of her stepfather's family. She had travelled there with her stepfather ahead of her mother.

Afterward her stepfather began having sex with her two to three times a week, she said, whenever her mother, a waitress who works long hours, was out of the house.

The stepfather, who had a number of secret extramarital affairs, would forbid his wife from going to different parts of the city in order to diminish the chances of her meeting one of his girlfriends.

The alleged victim said her stepfather would compare her body to his girlfriends and called her a "whore" because she wouldn't move when he touched her.

Now here's a real prize of a guy. Does it ever cease to amaze? How thoughtful of him to prepare his stepdaughter for her first boyfriend.

You are the judge, jury and executioner(if need be). What should his punishment be?

Always makes me sad to hear stuff like this. I hope the girl gets the help she needs to cope with this.

The stepdad will get his own justice. Karma is a bitch, and he'll be one too when he gets to prison.

That is a fabulous statement.
But lets cut everything off first, so he fits the description better.

Stories like this make me sick for two reasons. The first is the obvious one of the stepfather raping a girl that he is supposed to protect and look out for. Second is the way he casually shrugs it off like it's not a big deal.

I'm actually w/ Dude on this one. and it's part of a trend i've been seeing lately. what's with the militant vigilate justice theme i've been seeing lately? we create structure and courts adn law enforcement to ENFORCE TH LAWS, and punish those who can't follow them. Why can't we let those people do their jobs? The guy should get what's coming to him, as prescribed by law. No more, but certainly no less.

I understand your point and it is well taken.I think the vigilantiism displayed is partly because the justice system has failed miserable on so many occasions.

In my city recently,a woman blew her husband away while he was sleeping, and she claimed years and years of mental and physical abuse on his part.Interestingly there wasn't one police report in support of that,no women's shelters ever heard of her and her own family didn't have a clue about anything she said. The charges were dismissed and she walked out of court a free woman.

Not far also from where I live,a Catholic priest was on trial for decades of alleged child molestation charges. Several of the victims so enraged by the cover up by the church, the police, politicians etc,. that they took their own lives. The case was dismissed because the judge said it took to long to get the case to the courts. It took two years.Interestingly, the priest is the brother of a Senator, who just happens to be good pals with the Prime Minister.

I think when the courts stop relying so much on the individual rights of the accused and more to the victim's, that mentality may change. But it won't as long as the accused are treated with kid gloves for fear of offending them to the point where they become the victim.

Very true. I have never been in prison mind you but I have heard stories. One story I have heard (and tend to believe) is that prisoners as a whole dislike pedophiles. Throw him in prison and he will quickly become somebodys bitch.

shouldn't there be a balance? shouldn't all rights be considered? that whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing? I agree hte system won't always work. that's true of ANY system. but if it's so broken, people should be working to change/replace it, rather than turning to anarchy-style justice.

I agree 100% with you.Everyone should be treated fairly within the law. Now go tell that to a lawyer

btw... that is a very common misconception. it's really supposed to be 'innocent unless proven guilty'. 'until' implies that the defendant is guilty and its just the courts job to prove it.

oh.. and i dont think that this applies in this case. he's guilty and yes, prisons hate child molesters of any crime having to do with children. he'll become someone's bitch.

apologize for the miswording, you have a good point. But it's valid in EVERY case, because regardless of the wording, it's always true.
