The time lady will no longer allow you to call her to hear her say, "At the tone the time will be...." Most states abandoned it long ago. When was the last time you actually called the time? I haven't done so in over a decade.

As they say, time marches on.

Glory's Sun 08-29-2007 11:04 AM

I don't think I've ever used the phone to get the time.

In fact, I don't even think I knew such a number existed.

Seems kinda pointless to me.

maleficent 08-29-2007 11:07 AM

Son, in the old days, before everyone had a cell phone or a computer that automatically synced with time servers somewhere else - people had to know the time :) and this worked pretty good.

you used to be able to get the time from 411 too - but that was before the days of automated information...

What's the phone lady gonna do next? Phone sex i think.

Mith 08-29-2007 11:16 AM

Ah I used to call that up and then three-way call someone. Then I'd mute my end. It was funny to get the reactions.

Grancey 08-29-2007 11:22 AM

Growing up, we were always calling the time lady. That's the way it was, and that's what we did. We are now living where I grew up, and a few months ago I decided to dial that number that is permanently etched in my brain. I was greeted by the time lady who now gives out weather updates as well. I guess some things don't change.

I used to call the time lady! My brother and I did it constantly when we were kids. That was probably 15 or more years ago, though.

pan6467 08-29-2007 12:59 PM

When I grew up we called the Time/weather guy every day. He'd give the time and the weather for the day, so us kids would know what to expect and could make our plans.... course the plans always changed.

About 15 - 20 years ago the government closed down the weather service at Mansfield Lahm Airport and in doing so closed the time/weather guy.

shesus 08-29-2007 01:06 PM

Oh wow, I completely forgot about the time lady. I had a sticker on my phone with that number on it. Time and weather...it was quite helpful. That was the first thing I did every morning from age 7 so I could decide what to wear. Until the weather channel and internet came along...

My cousins and I used to fight over who got to call her when we were at my grandparent's house.

Oh the good ole days...

OMG, is going away?! I used to call that number when I was a kid. Now that I got older, I'd fake number people with it. I'd call the 853 number when friends would ask for the time, and put it on speaker phone to get a laugh. One more gag from my bag of tricks it gone. And that one was timeless ;)

analog 08-29-2007 04:40 PM

/constantly amazed at what passes for "news" these days... a quick note would definitely have sufficed.

Willravel 08-29-2007 04:51 PM

F**K

God damn it. Now I'll have to go online or something after the power goes out. I'll google "atomic clock" or something. I'll miss "at the tone, pacific standard time will be *pause* 10 *pause* 35 *pause* and 20 seconds *BEEP*".

*tear*

JumpinJesus 08-29-2007 05:04 PM

there was a time when the POP-CORN lady was my only human contact. I'm going to miss her. Though, I have to admit I haven't spoken to her since I was 15 or so.

uncle phil 08-29-2007 05:14 PM

/me shakes his head in bereavement...

BadNick 08-29-2007 06:39 PM

I just called it ...whew! thankfully she was still there: "at the tone the time will be 10:44 and ten seconds" ....beeeep If somebody needs marginal entertainment try 215-Ti6-1212

I had to make the rounds so I tried weather too: "This forecast for Philadelphia and vicinity is..." You too can know Philly weather at 215-We6-1212

Actually, since I plug my cell phone in downstairs and it's not handy, I call time at least once a week from my upstairs phone to check ...partly due to my dearest wife's mania about setting the clock in our bedroom 20 minutes fast ...or is it 15min? so she tricks herself into having more time. I like the time lady's voice.

ItWasMe 08-29-2007 06:49 PM

OMG Cynthetiq, don't scare me like that. I thought they were going to stop making actual popcorn!

I'll have to call the recording a couple more times, just to say goodbye. Jeez, it's been so long, I can't remember the phone number.

squeeeb 08-29-2007 10:59 PM

what they need is a Time Channel, like the weather channel, only for time. it tells you what time it is locally, what time it is in asia or europe, they can do remotes where one of the broadcasters is standing in florida and tells you what time it is there, etc....

i'd watch it. i mean, i ask people what time it is all day and i keep getting different answers...

Menoman 08-30-2007 01:09 AM

Hmm I believe I've seen this on TV but I've never actually called any numbers to find out what the time was.

I guess it's kinda a money sink for them at this point since the majority of people nowadays have cell phones or PDAs.

Though, on a side note, I wish that people still wore pocket watches, those were probably the coolest form of watch I know of and I just can't bring myself to wear one like they did back in the ole days :(

LoganSnake 08-30-2007 05:58 AM

Aw, I thought they were stopping the production of popcorn. :(

The news doesn't affect me in any way as I never even knew such a service existed.

i wear a pocket watch (really, i do). it's cool, cause it's got the chain. it goes with my chain wallet. i was thinking of having one of those pens on a chain you see at the post office to complete the whole "things in my pockets on a chain" theme.
