Should say "ARRR" or "ARGH" when talking like Pirates?
When conversing with pirates, and if we wish to express agreement, acknowledgment, or general grumblings, should we say "ARRR" (pronounced like the letter "r") or "ARGH (with the "g" pronounced at the end)?
In literature, I believe it's generally spelled "argh" (adding a sufficient number of "r's" expressing the appropriate pirate connotation). However, while engaged in verbal pirate banter, would any self-respecting pirate actually say "argh" with the "g" pronounced? I don't think so! ...unless, of course, there is some special meaning intended when one is spending time in prison. If the "g" must be pronounced at the end of the word "argh", must we also assume that Charlie Brown is (therefore) a pirate based on his consistent usage of the Pronounced "G" ARGH (PGA) upon his mid-air realization that Lucy has once again pulled the football away at the last minute? No, because we all know that pirates actually killed Charles Schulz for his defiant usage of the "PGA" for his Peanuts characters. He was warned! There is also that whole question of when (or when not) to use "Aye" in place of "Argh". Mr. Krabs (Eugene) often mixes his usage of the "PGA". But he is a crab and this is a completely different topic. My advice is to use common sense and caution when talking with pirates. There are some helpful "pirate speak" translators on the web. But be careful! You can only trust content on the web when it's verifiable. “Or ye will be in Davey Jones' locker soon... Arrr, like my ol' scalwag, Charles Schulz. Gar, Where can I find a bottle o'rum?!” ...or something like that. I'm too afraid to actually say anything to a pirate. |
I'm gonna go with ARRRR
|
I say don't talk pirate.
Especially if it's that confusing. |
Aye, Matey. ARRR is the correct spelling. Nary a pirate can read nor write so to argue the matter is equivocal.
|
I believe Charles Schulz paid the ultimate price for his failure to respect pirate lingo. I refuse to comment on their literacy issues.
|
I'm going with "ARRR" for a pirate agreeing and "ARGH" for disagreeing. Not that I know any pirates.
|
ARRRRR = pirate.
ARRRGH = Charlie Brown :) |
Arrr all the way. And aye is the equivalent of yes every time. Whereas Arrr can be used as yes or a discouraging growl, etc.
|
I know several pirates- really, one has a pirate hat on in his drivers license photo- and its ARRRRRRRRRR (emphasis varies based on usage )

ARRRRR! Ye gads! The Pirate's day approaches! Rascals and scallywags - ALL HANDS ON DECK! We set sail at dawn for Jamaica to lay in a store of RUM!!
|
I'm sorry to let you all down here, but the actual phrase is "HAR!" ... as in "Me Harties!"
They only say "Arr!" when they have been punctured by a sword or pistol slug... the "Aargh!" may only be heard when one is hung from the yardarm! :) |
"ARRR" is spoken by pirates when attacking their enemies.
"ARGH" is spoken by people mowed down by pirates. |

The video of "loading-ready-run" is a good tutorial.
|
Was going to see that last Johnny Depp pirate flick...
...but I didn't when I found out it wasn't rated ARRR! |
Arr for starting sentences, Yarrr for agreement, Narr for disagreement, Gar for disgust.
|
oh my fucking god...
|
I'd have to say no "G" included, ARRR
-Will |
The "g" is too hard to pronounce, so ARRR it is.

I thought a good modern day example was Steve the Pirate from dodge ball... if memory served he said it with a hint of both a "c" and "g" sound in it, like "carrrgh!".
|
What did the pirate say when he found his long lost son?
There ya ARRRRR! |
Why would you be talking like a pirate?
And it's Arrrrrrr... there's no g, c, q, or 4 in the whole expression. :) |
Fuck talking like a pirate... I think it's time we start raping and pillaging like pirates...
|
I will go ask the person who walked by in his Captain Jack costume. At least I *think* it was a costume.
|
People, people! Clearly it's Yarrrrrrrr!
Sheesh, haven't any of you talked to a pirate lately? It's so obvious. /shakes head. |
