Perseid Meteor Shower
I didn't see this posted yet so here it is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perseids (You can also just search for it on google for more information.) Apparently it occurs every year and peaks on August 12. Supposedly tonight around 10pm you will start to see about one meteor a minute. Just look toward the NE sky. Enjoy. |

We went camping yesterday and spent last night gazing up at the stars. Even thought the shower hadn't peaked yet, the show was incredible. We saw probably one a minute or so, and a brilliant one every few minutes. It's a shame you can't really seem them in the city or I'd spend tonight stargazing as well.

I love the Perseid Meteor Shower--it's a virtual bonanza of meteor-spotting. My mom and I usually drag my old mattress out to my parents' front deck and set up camp.
Unfortunately, tonight I will be in a city, and it's cloudy. Bummer. I'll probably try to catch some meteor shower action none the less.

Figures....it's cloudy out
Last meteor shower I watched was about 2.5 years ago, middle of November...woke up with a start about 4:30am, realized there was to be a shower around that time, grabbed my coat and ran outside. Awesome display. Spouse woke up shortly after, cursed me for being on the computer at that hour, came downstairs with every intention of chewing me out, instead saw me in my coat and slippers staring at the sky and came out and joined me. We were like kids at fireworks.

Went today with a few friends. Drove about 20 km north of the city. The skies were relatively clear but there was still a lot of light pollution. In any case, we caught at least 30-40 of them each, with about 5 of them very pronounced, and 1 breath-taking one, leaving a trail over a significant part of the celestial sphere, and swallowing the stars around it with its brightness.
The most significant meteor we saw seemed to give off about as much light as the moon, but most of them were like little dim stars darting quickly over the night sky. At first I had trouble seeing them, but after about an hour outside, my eyes were very well adjusted. I'm not sure how major this meteor shower is. What did the rest of you see?

Dang. It's cloudy and foggy here. I'll try again tomorrow. Anyone get good pictures (I know we have some terrific photographers here with better setups than mine)

I didn't stay up for too long last night to watch them. But I was able to see a good few before bed. Most of the ones that I saw were little ones. There was one that covered as much of the sky that wasn't light polluted, but that was it. I'm glad some of you were able to see it though.
