If you're not paying for the extra box, it' sillegal, and digital cable boxes are addressable. They will find it and you will be fined. Call the cable company and pay for the extra box if you want to use it. Testing it is a gray area, prolonged use is illegal.

there was even a time before the new digital boxes, but with the expanded service boxes of a few years ago that were addressable. We run an old analog box because the digital one's fan is way too noisy for the bedroom, and it's CONSTANT even when it's off.

I am pretty sure as long as your parents keep paying for it it is legal. But just to be on the safe side you might as well give it back to them let them return it and get one on your own bill. Should cost the same and then you know it is 100% legal.

I agree with BBtB, if it's being paid for, it's legal.

Each box has a decoder card in them. They are 100% trackable. TWC or Brighthouse knows what you are doing. don't worry about it, because the box was obtained legally. As long as your parents continue paying for the service you have nothing to worry about. Its just like taking your satellite box over to someones house and plugging it into their satellite dish.
