it's directory information with a link into your life. you pay for an on-call personal assistant who can help you with avariety of needs. for those who are not self-sufficient enough or too fucking busy to do it themselves, this is a great service. to anyone else, just another waste of money.

I think this is one of the most ridiculous and creepy products ever, but I laughed until I cried when I saw their newest commercial. It is a close-up of a talking about calling infone, and she says that she called trying to find Wrigley Field for her son's baseball team. She is just so happy and pleased with the service and she says, "Not only did the operator give me the directions, but she said she would stay on the line until I got there. I can't believe she would do that for me!" Meanwhile, superimposed on the bottom of the screen are the prices for the service. 89 cents a call and 15 cents a minute. OF COURSE the operator will stay on the line, you are paying her to! I know that it is just an actress, but what an assinine commercial.

well 15c/minute isn't exactly very much considering they're probly paying their staff at LEAST like 8/hr and then all that overhead and whanot is gotta be a lot. they're just hoping for the quick calls really 'what's the phone number for xxxxx' plus dinner reservations when u don't even know the number and the occasional directions when ur lost in bfe. shrug, can always call a roommate who's at home and have him give u the directions from maps.yahoo.com

The people who call have the cost subsidized by advertisers. Infone is a legal "shill" (to use the old term). Infone is paid by one advertiser or another to get the person on the phone steered in their direction, be it a hotel, a restaurant, a show promoter, whomever. BTW 89¢ for directory information is 10¢ cheaper than what SBC (the local "Baby Bell") charges here, but is still 89¢ more expensive than Google. |

Hello, good evening, and bollocks.

Also in addition to what RoadRage said, they're counting on short calls -- I suspect most calls will be for something like, directory assistance, driving directions, short-answer stuff that can be google'd in a minute or less, and if it lasts a little longer, it won't be too expensive for the customer. That means the hourly rate will start approaching $25 - $50 or more for each operator if they take several calls a minute.
Now what I can't understand is how a service like TellMe (1-800-555-TELL) makes money, their service is completely free, often useful, and fun as hell to play with. They used to have short commercials but I haven't heard any for several months now. Although movie tickets probably generates some revenue for them... |
