Bernard Manning dead at 76
I'm really not going to celebrate anybody's death, whatever they stand for or are... I suppose in a way the sad thing wasn't so much him or the "jokes" - it was the fact that people like him (and Roy Chubby Brown) still have a huge following... whatever we think is cool or cutting edge, it often seems there is this huge silent majority who follow thing which are appalling or useless.

Maybe I need to get out more -I've never heard of him - so - for those who are in the same boat...

he was a working class comedian who's "jokes" were normally based on violence towards women, racism, and homophobia.
He was effectively banned from TV for the last 30 years in the UK, but still had a huge following and played to full audiences in working men's clubs until the end.

My boss was at an event recently (in April) at which he was an after dinner speaker. Apparently his first joke was:
"They say you are what you eat. I'm a cunt".

Ive heard Roy Chubby Brown tell that joke also.
Another very unfunny man.

*shrug* - it was pretty normal in the times. Not values I hold with, but the guy wasn't burning crosses on people's lawns, lynching them or anything like that.
I don't hold with racism, but you know, half of England was that way in the 60s and 70s. I remember my grandmother yelling at the TV during the Olympics "Look at that darkie run!"
