Women drowns self because her newborn was a girl
Now this is plain stupid: LINK
i think it proves just how scared some women are of their spouses. It's pretty sad.

Egyptian woman drowns self after having baby girl CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- An Egyptian woman married to a man with six daughters from previous marriages drowned herself Saturday just hours after giving birth to a girl because she feared her husband's reaction to fathering another daughter. The 27-year-old woman left her home in Saff, a rural town about 25 miles [40 kilometers] south of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, and drowned herself in an irrigation canal three hours after giving birth to her second daughter, police officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Before his wife gave birth, her husband had threatened to kill or divorce her if the couple had any more daughters, police said. Society in rural Egypt is largely conservative, and many parents often prefer having sons to daughters for cultural and economical reasons. Divorce is also considered a taboo in such areas. Many women would rather their husband take a second wife than be divorced. The husband, 38, had been married three times before. In each case, he divorced his wives after they gave birth to girls.

I believe the male carries the chromosome that determines the sex of a child. Henry the 8th had the same problem. I think he cut off the heads of some wives because he was upset that they kept having girls.

I just wanna know what the big deal about having boys is? Even in those back water places like... egypt and ... england. I mean so you have girls.. Could always start a prositution ring. Or have a bake sale. Either way.

my first thought was China with their "one child" law, but didn't realize how bad things are in Egypt.
Although I do realize how important it is to have a son in Muslim society.

And kill/divorce your wife for giving birth to girls? WTF? I know its a totally different society, but still, it seems very fanatical on the man's behalf to threaten his wife that way.

Although I know there are certain cultural aspect involved here, I believe there is also a HUGE issue of ego here.
I can't imagine being in a position where I would take my own life rather than face a "man" (and I use the term lightly) simply because I didn't bear the child of his preference. Not to mention, I would have moved heaven and earth to have had a daughter in addition to my son. Meh... Perhaps my two pennies are a little bias...

I remember a conversation I had with a fireman after a gruesome murder-suicide between a mother and her two kids in our hometown years ago. This guy had seen enough carnage to have earned the following opinion on the situation:
"At least that gene pool is dried up. Now her kids won't grow up to have screwed-up lives and have more screwed-up kids." You gotta admit it's an interesting viewpoint.

I have 2 boys, but my sister has 3 girls and a boy. The other night I had a dream that they all came to live with us. (God forbid anything happen to my sister or her hubby), This was a real nightmare, not that I had daugthers or sons, but that I had 3 of each :-)

That is very, very sad. I have come across a number of people (close friends, acquaintances, etc) who say they want sons and not daughters when they're old/stable enough to have kids. I never really understood the apparent over-emphasis on the importance of having boys. Maybe I'll never understand it.
I don't really intend to ever have kids, but I figure (at least in the US), people should be happy with what they get, boy or girl. There's so many people who can't even have kids and would probably give anything just to be able to conceive one. Whining about whether you have a boy or a girl seems really silly to me.

My god. That's all I can say. I feel sorry for the bloke as much as the woman. The woman - that she shoud be under that kind of pressure and have to live and die under such an oppresive regime. The man for having either the naievity to think he could dictate the sex of his offspring and punish the women involved if he did not get what he wanted, and also that he should feel that it was so important - he must lead such an insecure and empty life. Sad. Very, very sad.
