I don't know if any of you have seen this. It's the first birth control pill that's chewable... and minty. Does making it chewable and minty make it easier to remember to take it? Shouldn't the idea of going through painful child birth when you weren't ready both financially and mentally be good enough for you? "I don't mind the whole kid thing... I just really like the taste." I guess if you're really drunk in a bar and you meet a guy... you'll always have a breath mint. Ladies... how you feel about this? |
I think it's nearly completely unnecessary. Women who are conscientious will take the pill regularly. Those who aren't, and not necessarily because they care less about popping one out when they're not ready, willing, and able to support it properly, won't.
By nearly, I mean for those who have trouble swallowing pills, though considering the size of the birth control pill, this isn't very likely. What it comes down to, really, is how does a company make a product attractive when the competition is as high as it is? Many women these days are trying out new options: the patch, the ring, the injection, and even a small-yet-growing contingent of IUD followers. How does a company make women want to go back to something that fucks with hormones AND has to be remembered every day, versus something that fucks with hormones BUT only has to be remembered once a week, or once a month, etc? |
I am not a lady, but I dislike the idea.
Me: I need a mint... *looks through GFs purse* Mmmmm, that was good, I am gonna eat the rest, she'll never know! 3 months later: My brests look amazing! |
Maybe it's marketed for the 13 to 17 year olds that are having sex but still prefer their medicine in chewable kid form?

Flinstones Chewable Birth Control. |
easier to hide it from dad too.. maybe he'll think you just have bad breath when you're poppin pills in front of him
|
This sounds similar to those chocolate calcium chews that are targeted to women...totally unnecessary but someone will always jump on the "it's new, let's try it" wagon.
|
It's not that I'm just another guy who doesn't understand as my reaction to the commercial was the same as my g/f's - as tiny as the pill normally is, why does it need need to be chewable?
|
The only reason I can think of for it to be chewable is that sometimes the regular pill won't dissolve correctly-- like if you throw up soon after taking it. Chewing it may make it possible for the hormones to get into your system faster. Just speculation, though.
|
Some people are totally incapable of swallowing pills, even tiny little birth control pills. Plus you don't need water to take it--that makes it handy.

That makes sense to me... but why make it minty? What's next? Gummie Birth Control? |
Ha ha! I bet it is! "Hello Kitty" birth control pills.....

I would presume that the mint flavor makes the pill easier to chew and/or swallow--some medicine has a terrible taste, and chewing it would be hard without the added flavor. |

I understand that to a certain extent... But these people are using the damn flavor as a selling point and not just a way to mask the shitty taste. "Use our birth control... it's minty fresh." |
I have some friends who have trouble swallowing pills. They just cant do it, it makes them gag. One friend throws up unless she hides her pill in pudding.
For me though? Nah. For them? Bravo. |
I get the whole not being able to swallow pills thing. But that's not how these people are marketing their pill. Their marketing it to people that forget to take their pill at the same time every day. It's for people that are too busy to remember that they don't want kids. You can take it any time and anywhere.
If you life is so fucked up that you forget that you don't want kids then you actually deserve to have kids just so you have some humility in your life. |
That's not exactly how the commercial struck me. In fact, it looked kind of attractive to me because at 10pm, I am usually winding down for bed during the week but doing god knows what and where on weekends. I have often wished that there were a chewable version (not necessarily mint-like, but whatever) because every time I try to swallow them without water, they get stuck in my throat for what feels like forever. I haven't thrown one up yet, but I just don't like that feeling and I'm not really good at swallowing pills. I sometimes have a gag reflex (like every other time) because my dad used to force us all to take a shit-ton of vitamins every day and just thinking about the handful of horse-pills I had to swallow every day as a teenager makes me want to wretch.
I'm not sure why you care so much, WK. Or maybe this was supposed to entertain you by creating some fashion of controversy. The whole "shouldn't not wanting kids be enough?" thing is quite the stretch. Also, the mint flavor was only mentioned a couple of times, and not even in the first half of the commercial from what I remember. It seemed more like an afterthought to me. |
To tell you the truth Supple Cow... I'm not sure why I care so much either.
I just feel that the constant need to make "new and improved" birth control pills is crazy. |
When they finally come up with birth control for men, it should come in gummi bear form... each day should be a small pack of gummi bears, with the medicated one a specific color so you know you have it... this way you get a pack of gummi bears AND you can't impregnate a chick. Gummi bears never looked so good.
|
Fuck that... I want birth control in the form of a six pack of Guinness.
|
Astoundingly enough, there is such a birth control for men that is readily-able to be digested in the form of liquor.
It is called alcohol-induced sexual impotence, and no such woman has ever gotten pregnant from this form of male birth-control . |
Yeah... that's kind of what I was saying...
Nothing beats whiskey dick. |
Why not make it minty? I'm not sure I understand the point of the dislike for this.
women who are on it, you're gonna take it however it's given to you right? So wouldn't you just rather have something minty instead of nasty? |
