That's it... release the Ice-9. I don't think I can go on without one of my favourite authors.

Sad news indeed. Whoa. It's as if a bright light just disappeared out there!
His writing made my life evolve from mundane to magical when I was in college. Guess he's discussing Bokononism with Kilgore Trout now.... Thanks Kurt. We Love You.

So it goes.
I just read his last book, A Man Without A Country. He was ready. Hell, he was shaking his fist at death and asking what took it so long. I'd love to be able to publish a book like that in my last few months of life. It's brilliant. It's the ultimate "Here's my last word on what I think of this world and everything in it". So long, Kurt. You've managed to succeed in doing what so many of us only aspire to do...you actually made a difference in this world. You will be remembered and missed, cross-generationaly. Not many men can say that.

So it goes, indeed.
![]() I have A Man without a Country sitting on my bookshelf...I was eventually going to get around to reading it. Seems this might be a good time to pick it up. My favorite quote? It's a toss-up, but this was the first that sprang to mind. Quote:

strange how reading someone's books can give you the illusion that the author will always be around. strange how news that shows you that you were wrong about that can affect you.
slaughterhouse five jolted me significantly when i ran into it, and it still does. i read quite alot of his other work, but s5 is the one that has stuck with me. he had such a lovely voice-----able to make quite radical ideas seem sweet and light as candy. you'd eat them; they'd tickle your throat and make you laugh. you'd think that meant that the ideas would disappear as soon as the laughing stopped. but they didnt. i feel a little like i've lost an old friend--you know, one of those folk you have known for a long long time but dont really keep in touch with, but who you retain affection for regardless, who makes you smile when you think of him or her, whose presence you kinda take for granted and that makes you happier in the world for that. despite the fact that you rarely talked any more. the kind of friend that was always great to see, to see how they have changed and how they havent, when you'd see them. the intervals between meetings doesnt seem to matter. sad that way.

God made mud.
God got lonesome. So God said to some of the mud, "Sit up!" "See all I've made," said God, "the hills, the sea, the sky, the stars." And I was some of the mud that got to sit up and look around. Lucky me, lucky mud. I, mud, sat up and saw what a nice job God had done. Nice going, God. Nobody but you could have done it, God! I certainly couldn't have. I feel very unimportant compared to You. The only way I can feel the least bit important is to think of all the mud that didn't even get to sit up and look around. I got so much, and most mud got so little. Thank you for the honor! Now mud lies down again and goes to sleep. What memories for mud to have! What interesting other kinds of sitting-up mud I met! I loved everything I saw! Good night. I will go to heaven now. I can hardly wait... To find out for certain what my wampeter was... And who was in my karass... And all the good things our karass did for you. Amen.

Loved his stuff. He was a gifted writer and a free thinker. I much admired him. His writing style read so effortlessly. Reading his books were easier than breathing sometimes.

Is it me or does the means of his death seem to have been pulled right from one of his stories?
I think it's time for me to read another one of his.

i'm not sad to see kurt go at all; he lived a hell of a life and, as ratbastid pointed out, he was ready to go. i'm just glad he made the choice he did to put his thoughts on paper. loved the way he wrote, and loved the topics he usually wrote about. i just hope he wasn't in pain at the end.

Earlier today, in the ICU, a 37 year old man who's been dying slowly of brain cancer for the past 5 years was being visited by his wife and two children, son 10, daughter 7, because he was feeling particularly well this morning. He started to code while they were talking, and finally succumbed despite everyone's efforts to resuscitate him.
The 7-year-old daughter said to her mother, in the midst of everyone trying to resuscitate him, "why won't they let daddy be with the angels?" Smart and tough girl, for 7 years old. I heard that first-hand from a nurse who was there helping. Too bad her daddy wasn't famous... instead of people waxing emotional on internet forums, he'll have a small blurb in an obituary somewhere. I find it a little sick that death is publicity. |

If you want to read the story that is totally true and so incredible that you can't put it down; read "The Eden Express" by Kurt's son Mark.
It will give you insight about dropping out, taking off and creating an sort of artist colony that is waaaaay Off The Grid. All the struggles around such a bold move by those young idealistic kids is very intense & worth the read.

Could we get a Vonnegut reading group together?
I love his stuff. As an english maejur, I read the regs, Slaughterhouse 5 etc. As a bookstore haint, I read much more. Galapagos was my fave. Look; his life will expand a million years beyond most. By then man will be a flipper based society that barks and swallows fish.

The man was effortlessly, endlessly, amazingly creative. He sparkled and shone and made you think and laugh and be glad you'd been lucky enough to find his words to read.
Thanks, Mr. Vonnegut, for all the memories.
