I'd hire unemployed people to do ridiculous things for me, like level up my Mithra on FFXI while I'm busy with school. I'd pay them a pretty good wage too, depending on how much I win. If I won a stupidly huge amount of money, like $60million, then I'd willingly pay them like $50k/yr just to level up my character and make it bad ass. Then I'd hire some people just to preview movies for me and tell me which ones they liked; same wages for these people. Then I'd hire some more unemployed people to scout the web and other sources for cool music for me to listen to. I probably wouldn't invest any of it, but just spend it slowly throughout the rest of my life. Well okay, maybe I'd invest a little bit, but I'd hire a professional to help me with that.

In all honesty I don't know what I would do. I hardly ever play the lottery; the occasional scratch ticket “when I have an extra dollar” I say to myself, and less frequently the lottery itself. It has been said the odds are more in my favor to be struck by lightning than winning the lottery. Seeing what was the jackpot on Mega Millions I bought a quick pick, and thought nothing of it. No one won on that Friday, and it rolled over to apparently the highest lottery jackpot ever. Handing my dollar over to the woman behind the convenience store counter, I don't expect to win, but I hope. In an instance my life would completely change upon seeing my numbers being drawn on the television screen. I don't know what I would do right away, I'd be in shock. Intellectually I would like to do, you know, whatever else said they would. I know what I would want and like to do, or to say one of the first things I’d do is marry my girlfriend. With the money I would be able to give her dream wedding to her.

It all depends on how much I win. Under 3M, I'm not doing much. I'd do something special for my family and instead of paying everything off I'd pay things off over time with the interest earnings. After that, I wait and keep working (maybe something part-time) while I slowly pay everthing off. By the time I'm 40-50 I can retire permanently.

When you start talking about insane amounts of money then it's pretty much whatever you want.

...unless you win. That's the idea. Playing against the odds creates a sense of danger and adventure, however small, and the price for that sense is the price of a ticket. So long as it's done in moderation, there really is no harm. I'd never buy one, but I'd hardly judge someone who does.

First post on TFP, greetings all.

California held its first Million Dollar Raffle last Saturday with the chance of winning, while still meager, better than 1 in 500,000. The odds were definitely better than the state lottery, and also offered a greater payoff than Scratchers. I convinced myself to buy one.

Figuring two thirds of the million will remain after taxes and other fees, I would: pay off my parents mortgage and my student loans, set aside some money for my brother's college education, send a little ($10,000 or so) to my grandparents in China, buy a new car (Prius or another hybrid) and a new computer and various other gadgets, and place the rest into various CDs and/or bonds, maturing throughout the year. With the interest accrued I could supplement my income and continue to help my family. My parents could sell their business and live much more leisurely.

Pay off my truck (it's not much now, but one less thing that's stressing me at the moment), pay off my parents' houses and cars, pay off my brother's cars and house, build a smallish cabin (like I'm planning to anyway...after the truck's paid off). Invest the rest for college funds for the younger members of my family (and older ones too if they want) and just stuff my husband and I want to do.

I didn't put it down to the penny so I might have gone over, but since I never win anything...

on the subject of what "I'd" do with a landfall lottery win - probably the first step would be to construct a huge statue of humanity in the middle of nowhere. just so someone could stumble across it in a 100 years and say "wtf". because in 100 years we won't speak real english anymore. and a huge statue of a nameless dude would be wild.

basically he won and then spent about $100,000 on financial advisors, hoping to invest his 80 or so million and come out a billionaire. He's already pretty far, i think like 120 million. it's insane, but really wise of him. I think i would do the same, but beforehand i would quit the job i would have, buy a nicer house, and a nice car.
