Is Britney the new Anna Nicole?

More celebrity news...

Quote:
Amid a swirl of rehab rumors, Britney Spears made a shocking public appearance on Friday night, debuting her newly shaved head at a tattoo shop in Sherman Oaks, California.

Spears, who has faced public criticism for her partying ways since divorcing Kevin Federline in November, went to Body and Soul to get a tattoo of red lips on her wrist, tattoo artist Max Gott told Los Angeles' KABC-TV.

"She just wanted something real small on her wrist, something dainty," Gott told the station. "She got some cute little lips on her wrist."

Police came to the scene to manage the large crowd that gathered outside the shop as Spears got her ink.

Britney's appearance came on the same day that reports surfaced claiming the singer briefly entered a rehab clinic earlier this week.

Although her spokespeople have yet to chime in, and "Access Hollywood" cited a source close to Spears denying it, several outlets (initiated by "Extra") claim that Spears checked into a treatment facility in the Caribbean on Wednesday. People and TMZ.com reported that she checked out a day later.

People reported that Spears was treated at the Crossroads Centre, a facility on the Caribbean island of Antigua founded by Eric Clapton. ("Crossroads," of course, is also the name of Britney's only theatrical release.)

Spears was reportedly last seen leaving New York on Monday on a private plane heading for Miami, accompanied by her two young sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston. She returned to Los Angeles on Friday, according to a source close to the family.

Funny sad how our society is today...... one woman's body is barely cold and we are all taking bets as to when the next girl will be thrown over the edge.

What's sad is the people around these women (and the Olsen twins, and Tara Reid and Lindsey Lohan and so on) don't seem to truly care nor try to help them. It's all about the money.

Even the press, they see what is going on and do nothing but continue to hound these people. These women can't even check into rehab anonymously to get the help they need, without the press releasing where the rehab is, what kind of place it is, how long they will be there..... then the press sits back and bets on the next relapse.

Then the so called fans who care so much and want so desparately for their starlet to get better.... buys the news, buys the rags, and so on. So of course the press is going to keep going to get all they can.... that starlet is making them big bucks in sales....

The rest of us sit and say the "right things" and laugh over how this is news and create threads like this and posts like this one.... but we still pay attention and to some degree buy the hype and we laugh over how "white trash" Britney has become and we are able to feel above the poor rich little lost girl.

All the while, there is a human life that is crying out for help and we all just sit back ignore the cries and perhaps add pressure to those cries.

some days i spend too much time reading newspapers online. today was one of them and one result is getting to read this very strange article about all this in the guardian, which includes the question from the op.

Months of wild partying. And now Britney shears in public

Paul Harris in New York
Sunday February 18, 2007
The Observer

In a bizarre twist in the erratic career of America's former princess of pop, Britney Spears has sparked speculation she may be suffering some kind of breakdown after she shaved off her own hair in a shop window.

Spears turned up at a Los Angeles hairdressing salon late on Friday evening, but when staff apparently refused her request for such a dramatic cut, she picked up the electric clippers herself and, as onlookers gawped through the glass, sliced off her long brown hair.

Afterwards, the bald pop star strode into a nearby tattoo parlour in the LA suburb of Sherman Oaks. There, again as passers-by gathered, the 25-year-old had a pair of pink and red lips tattooed on her wrist and a cross on her hip.

As news of her actions began to spread, websites and cable news channels were buzzing with details - and online video - of Spears' appearance. Tattoo store employee Emily Wynne-Hughes told Usmagazine.com Britney had arrived agitated and, when asked why she had shaved her head, replied: 'I don't want anyone touching me. I'm tired of everybody touching me.' Hughes added: 'She wasn't making sense at all and you could tell she's not in a good place. After she left, we just looked around and said to each other, "We just saw a huge celebrity on the verge of a nervous breakdown".'

Spears has lived almost all her life in the harsh glare of the public eye. From Disney child star to teen pop idol to young mother, she has rarely been out of the spotlight that made her world- famous and her albums bestsellers.

But this weekend the cameras were on a different young woman. Not only her hair is gone. Gone too is the perfectly-toned physique of her videos and the fashionable outfits that inspired a generation of American youngsters. They have been replaced by an image of a pale shaven-headed woman, puffy-faced, and wearing a drab grey sweatshirt.

In a nation still agog at the death of reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith, many now fear Spears could follow her down that doomed road. It is a stunning turnaround for a woman who just a few months ago was still married with two children and plotting her comeback album that was set to relaunch her career.

But now the image of a bald, shaven Spears is the talk of America. The news has been given blanket coverage on papers, cable channels and gossip websites. 'Bald Britney Breakdown!' declared the influential Drudge website.

Los Angeles is long-used to the unusual shenanigans of its celebrity denizens, but few will ever have witnessed scenes as odd as those on Ventura Boulevard when a black SUV pulled up outside a closed hair-dressing salon just before 7pm. As staff were called to reopen the business Spears apparently wept inside her car, then went inside and asked to have her hair cut off. When staff refused to carry out the dramatic request, Spears picked up the electric shears herself. Beginning at the front of her head, she started shaving and her dyed black hair fell to the floor in long strands. At times she paused and looked in the mirror or at photographers gathered outside, then completed the task. She had gone from gorgeous pop idol to grim GI Jane.

But the night was not over. Spears next headed for a nearby tattoo parlour called Body and Soul. By this time fans, gawkers and paparazzi had gathered outside. The throng was so big police were called to control the crowd. In front of a phalanx of cameras Spears proceeded to get a tattoo on her wrist of a pair of lips. Then, trying to hide her lack of hair under a grey, hooded tracksuit top, she fought her way through the crowd, helped by police, and drove off in the direction of her home. 'We could see her in the mirror and her head is completely shaved. It looks terrible,' Spears fan Angelique Uram told a local TV station. The latest and most bizarre - but probably not the last - incident in the destruction of Spears' career and reputation was over.

Spears has struggled to make the transition to adult star, a path littered with far more failures than successes. At the same time, her personal life has collapsed. At 25 she is twice divorced and the mother of two children. Her marriage to her second husband, Keven Federline, broke up late last year.

Since the split Spears has embarked on binge of hardcore partying. With celebrity friends such as socialite Paris Hilton and actress Lindsay Lohan, her drunken exploits have been relentlessly chronicled. Along with Hilton, she made the cover of Newsweek in an issue headlined 'The Girls Gone Wild Effect'. That sentiment seemed especially true after a series of evenings out in which Spears was not wearing underwear, established beyond doubt in dozens of explicit pictures.

Last week one of Spears' most trusted former confidantes, Felicia Culotta, went public with her concerns for her old boss. Culotta spent most of the past 10 years as one of Spears' personal assistants and posted an email on a fan website warning that Spears was in the middle of a huge personal crisis. She also admitted she was powerless to help. 'I cannot save her from herself nor can I commit her to any type of treatment programme against her wishes,' Culotta wrote.
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/world...015787,00.html

i put 3 paragraphs in bold because i thought they were particularly strange. the reactions of the writer to all this gives a good image to hang on what pan is talking about above.

this in particular:

Quote:
'I don't want anyone touching me. I'm tired of everybody touching me.'
indicates that something fucked up is happening that runs beyond the usual celebrity-trashed-again-o-what-Outrage-we-all-feel-what-will-the-Children-think-seeing-celebrity-x-all-trashed-again stuff.

personally, i hope all this turns out to be a bit of performance art, not least because it would be the best work britney has yet done.

Because it makes the average person feel superior to see the rich and famous fall apart like a house of cards.
If some 18 year old shaved her head and got some tattoos, we wouldn't make a big deal of it and certainly wouldn't devote 4 pages of a nationally known newspaper to her impending 'mental breakdown', we'd probably just mutter something about 'whatever works for ya' and not give it a second thought.
I do find it a bit fascinating that so many who become so famous based on talent go down a path of self-destruction, to the point of death. Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe... lot of good talent and the ensuing adulation did for them.

I hate to be the asshole here, but if Britney Spears wanted peace and quiet then Britney Spears could probably get peace and quiet. She lives in a multimillion dollar mansion/fortress with private security and the means to have anything and everything delivered right to her door. If Britney Spears wanted to stay out of the limelight then, she could probably do such, I imagine.

Yes, she most certainly has a lot of people watching her every move, but a lot of it is her own doing and while I'm empathetic, I'm not rending garments or gnashing teeth over her plight. There are plenty of low-key celebrities out there for her to emulate, instead she chooses to go to swanky bars with notorius attention seeking "celebrities" in hand, does something outrageous--flashes the goods, trades clothes with the staff, gets drunk and pukes in the back of an SUV--and then cries about how she has no privacy? She shaved her head in a public place, and went to a public tatoo parlor with paparazzi in tow...I don't know seems more a plea for attention than the acts of someone in the midst of a real breakdown.

Exactly.

Britney was fun to look at...a few years ago. She was sometimes even a guilty pleasure to listen to. But, it's time to move on Babe. That was then, and this is now. You're yesterday's news, now matter what "stunts" you pull. Either find yourself a new niche, or take what money you have left (that Kevin Federline hasn't blown) and buy yourself a nice ranch in Montana, and quietly fade away. Have the decency, and the dignity, to allow the public to remember you when you were something, not the sorry specimen that you've become.

While I respect the fact that she is a human being in obvious pain and misery, she has both chosen to live the life she is living and has the resources to get proper help if she so chooses. A lot of people don't have the luxury of that.

Either way, I don't know why people are acting like she's a bad mom because she goes out and parties some and *gasp* shaves her head. Big fucking deal. Let her live her life. She's not hurting anyone. How many parents don't go out sometimes?? Everyone needs a break once in a while.

Just a jot - shes recently walked out of rehab (a day) and is prolly slightly 'unadjusted',

plus why isn't reasonable to assume given her previous media status as a 'Naughty Virgin Teen' , and that she is just a kid ****!!!! Should we be amazed?

- And the temptations available to a mega rich youngun' in a capitalist society, notwithstanding the fact that the money speaks louder than any reality that I know of............Cutting your hair off is just a finger up to the planks - N0?

Sinead did it a long time ago
Ripley(aka Sig Weaver) did it in Alien
Persis did it some Trek movie

In ye olde england women wore wigs-they were shaven underneath,no stigma there, just being part of the fashionable times...........

Sorry but why should you expect a rich child with too many playthings to do anything else?

Cue:Picture of young mother with child, dieing of AIDS/Starvation/Rape/Drugs etc anywhere in the world..........and we are concerned with what exactly?

And after shaving her hair Friday she went to the Mondrian Hotel in an electric blue wig where sources say they saw her shaving her legs at the pool.

I don't think Britney will replace Anna.

http://thesuperficial.com/2007/02/an..._fox_news.html

I saw this and 2 thoughts crossed my mind....

first, this was taken by someone who supposedly loved her? He can be heard saying, "this footage is worth money"

Second, she is so smashed and out of it, why didn't someone get her help? I truly believe after watching this, she wasn't rational and she probably should have been in a hospital somewhere getting much needed help.

It's pathetic that the hangers on will do shit like this and have dollar signs in their eyes rather than help the person.

How sad this came out after her death.... why not release it while she is still alive and show people how badly she needed help so that maybe she would have gotten it.

I know that would have embarassed her, made her mad and she would have left you penniliess. Pathetic.
