New House - Might have rats.
 

So I just moved into my new house my roommates and I noticed that there might be some critters living below us. :grumpy: Anyone know of some good rat poison and/or critter poison that I can get ahold of. I told my landlord but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

I've used dcon before. Worked pretty well and quick. Bait was put out and within about 3 days we found 2 dead and smelt 2 others. The smell went away in less then a day though(never found those).

It a possible hazard for pets so I put the bait in an area that my dog didn't have access to and wouldn't be likely to get into the dead rats either.

The thing about bait is that if it doesn't work quickly, you could end up with a carcass behind the walls, and that's most definitely something you don't want. I'd try some traps to start with but make your landlord responsible for hiring an exterminator. There's most likely something in your lease about that (if it's a standard one).

Get a cat, a young adult female, they are the real hunter/killers. Not only will they hunt and kill the rats, they will usually bring them back to you, proudly stating "Look what I did!" When I was a kid, we lived in a neighborhood where tree rats were all over the place, none were ever in the house, not for very long anyway.

Keep on the landlord. This is his/her job, not yours. As others have mentioned, poison is not the best way to do it since its not immediate. Look around the house for entrance locations and plug them with sprayfoam or something similar. Tinfoil works well, since the critters aren't terribly enthused about chewing through it. It's what I use at my cottage.

If they are indeed rats, a cat may not do you a lot of good. If it's just mice, get a cat. If the landlord complains, tell them to fix their shit.

We had this problem once, and if you use poison there is a good chance that the rodent will die in the walls and you have the odor for at least two weeks. I also had a cat that did a great job, but that was a traumatic experience for me (long story). The best, by far, was an electronic pest control that we purchased at our local hardware store. We plugged the small unit into an outlet in an area where we heard the rodents, and the device would emit a high-pitched sound that the rodent could hear but we could not. This sound caused the rodents to leave. It worked. This was better than anything we had tried. We left it plugged in, and we never had a rodent problem again.
