LOS ANGELES - Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon's scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America's history, has died, his wife, Betty, said Tuesday. He was 93.

Damn....
I liked Ford. He got a raw deal-he 'pardoned' Nixon so that the country could put the whole sordid deal behind and move on; he was thrust into a position as leader of the free world without much forethought and handled it with grace.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Ford.

Craven Morehead 12-26-2006 10:53 PM

I agree ng, he was a good man.

RIP

Bill O'Rights 12-27-2006 05:27 AM

He was certainly not our most charismatic President, but he did do a very good job...considering what he was handed. Rest in peace, Mr. President. You've earned it.

I wonder...
How many of us actually remember President Gerald R. Ford? I suspect damn few.

warrrreagl 12-27-2006 05:28 AM

Too bad he wouldn't tell us who really killed Kennedy, though.

The_Jazz 12-27-2006 05:31 AM

At the time, pardoning Nixon seemed like exactly the wrong thing to do. With 30 years of perspective, it's now clear that it was exactly the right thing to do. Ford had the foresight and courage to do it, even though he knew it would cost him.

He wasn't a favorite of mine, but he did as good a job as he could. RIP, Mr. President.

RIP Mr. Ford. I was just a kid when he was president, but he is the first president I remember.

Wilkerson 12-27-2006 01:06 PM

Sad to see him go. He did his best to get the U.S. back on track after Watergate and the VietNam years but had limited success as inflation and other woes kept cropping up. May he sleep peacefully in his new home.

First president I got to vote for, not that it did him any good.

Average_Joe 12-28-2006 09:36 AM

One of the only presidents to never win an election. George W. Bush was the other. :)

Thank for sharing and be sure to let the door hit your rear on the way out...try to remember Ford as a seperate entity apart from other political cretins at this mournful time.

Bill O'Rights 12-28-2006 12:35 PM

Settle down, boys. Let's try to keep a modicum of respectful decorum.

Hey, come on, I put a smiley in there. ;) I just couldn't resist. Besides, I'm as apolitical as a person can get.

Besides, I was inaccurate. He won his second term fair and square.

Think how I must feel...I may be the only person who voted for him twice. (and still they couldn't get me committed to an asylum)

Though I wasn't alive when Ford was president, I understand he did a great service for our country when a decent man was really needed to step up.

However, right now I'm really irritated that CBS cut out of the Sun Bowl (which only they are showing) to cover his funeral (which is on every other major news network). It doesn't make much economic sense to me to cut out of something CBS probably spent big bucks to get the rights for to show something people are most likely watching on other channels.

Sorry, Mr. President, but I'm sure as a football fan yourself you would understand my concern.

Ford was cool - at least the only thing about him that people could make fun of was his clumsiness. RIP, sir!
