Not far from where I work there is a street named "Rand Way". Some streets that branch off from, or are near, Rand Way include Reardon Court, Taggert Court, Francisco Court and, of course, Johngalt Court.

In case anyone doesn't get the reference; Ayn Rand wrote a novel called "Atlas Shrugged". These streets I saw near Rand Way are all named after characters from this book (Hank Reardon, Dagny Taggert, Francisco d'Anconia and John Galt).

I just thought this was kinda cool.

What's the political bent like there? Sizable number of libertarians? Genuine/posturing small-government republicans? Or is it just a bunch of democrats with a fondness for crazy Russian women?

It's a fairly conservative/Republican area; though the state itself is more Democrat. I'd be interested in finding out who picked out the names for those streets.

This rings a bell. I think my brother read this book as an assignment at his job. Yeah I'm almost sure of it. I think the CEO of the large banking corporation he works for assigned this book to the members of his program to read. I remember him saying it was a good book.

definently a good book, but pretty tough to read, just pretty high level and slower paced, but still good.

thats a pretty neet neighberhood name theme...

I used to make worms armageddon teams with name themes like that... have an atlas shrugged team, a dune team etc...

Great street names! Atlas Shrugged is my favorite book. I cringed when I realized that people really do need the names explained. It just seems like such critical reading. I assume, "of course everyone understands the references!" But, nah... not the case. I have only met 3 people that have read anything by Ayn Rand - shame. I have a housemate with a "Reardon Steel" t-shirt. The first time I noticed it, I broke down in laughter and gave him a high-five. No one else gets it.

Great book! I did, indeed, have to read this book for work. And it was totally worth it. It's definitely one of my favorite books, if not my favorite book. And I am also a born-again Objectivism believer. Rand for life!

After I finished the book, I was wishing it was longer. And it is one mammoth of a book. The book accomplishes so much in its 1100 or so pages - much more than any other books usually do. GREAT characters and a great story.

funny, i thought 'atlas shrugged' was primarily a romance novel for geeky chicks. the philosophical side strikes me as taking a long time to build strawmen bad people, so she (and her series of increasingly more principled lovers, of course) can strike them down with ardor and justice. but i do think that the street naming convention is pretty sweet.

I know the feeling. I have a dry erase board in my cubicle at work. Not long ago I wrote "Who is John Galt?" on it, and since then people have been asking me who he is. A few people apparently thought it was a riddle and wrote their answer on the board (one person wrote down that John Galt is the president ).

I made it through Anthem as a high-schooler, but did not return for more Rand. Somehow I put Atlas Shrugged in the same category as Gravity's Rainbow (Pinchon)... not by virtue of content, but just because they were both hella long and though I *love* to read (and was, in fact, an English major), I just could not, for the life of me, commit myself to getting through either novel. Same went for Les Miserables, as much as I loved the first half. I wish I had more patience for these hallmark works, but perhaps later in life when my brain has stopped functioning like a squirrel in heat...

The longest "critical" novel that I have made it through so far is All the King's Men... brilliant, brilliant literature.
