Please help me find this book!

I was chatting with my husband tonight, and dredged up an old old old childhood memory of my absloutely favorite book from when I was in 4-5-6 grade. Problem is, I have a VERY fuzzy recollection of the book and what it was about, and I am turning to my friends here at the TFP to help me out!

I do know that the book was either set in or had the theme of being in a boarding school for boys, most likely in England (I seem to remember it being British). It was an illustrated book, with very detailed, intricate drawings of inventions the kids had come up with to foil teachers and "the system." I think the book was about inventions kids had come up with to make being a kid easier- one of the inventions was a pencil that when you sharpened it, the shavings revealed answers to tests and such.

I have ABSLOUTELY NO idea what the book was called. When I wanted to check it out of the library when I was in grade school, I would just go to the section of the library that the book was in and then find it from there. Please please please help me find a copy of this book somewhere! Ask your friends! This is all I want for Christmas!

Well, my first thought would be "The Magic Pencil" but I don't think that's it since that book revolves around a girl.

Crazy

Well ya'll are just way too good to be true. If you can do that can you do this?

I read a book once many many years ago about a kid that was living is some postapocolyptic world and in his community people died very young. The kid comes up with a theory that people were dying so early because there was absolutely no danger in their lives. There was some time travel involved. I know at one point the kid met himself as a younger kid. Also it turns out in the end that the grown up him invented the machine that made life possible.

I'm rather fuzzy on this. I dont remember much about this book but it has been driving me crazy for years. I've asked other on other literature boards, I've had every person I know looking for this book for years.

Xera: It doesn't sound familiar, but I must recommend the website Loganberry Books: Stump the Bookseller. I've tracked down many mysteries on that website. They'll charge you $2 to post a question, but they keep all the old answers up, so you can probably find your book by browsing.
