Mom-to-be doll isn't a family values kind of product. OK?
As a capitalist enterprise Wally Mart can do what it wants. Evidently consistency isn't one of the things it wants.
.............. from The Free-Lance Star, Fredricksburg, Va A pregnant Barbie is obscene, but soft-porn mags aren't? Wal-Mart has decided that a pregnant, married version of Barbie is obscene. As a mother of nine children, I am hurt that, according to their standards, I have spent 81 months of my life as a walking, breathing piece of obscenity. Wandering through the aisles at this family-values establishment, I am struck by what they don't consider obscene: condoms prominently displayed in every size, color, and texture; sequined lingerie for little girls; and Cosmopolitan magazine with headlines that only a women's magazine can get away with. (They pulled the equally offensive men's versions off the shelves, but the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, which is soft porn, will continue to be sold.) The corporate decision-making seems to follow no defined line. They seem to be antifamily, which is interesting for a business that has risen to the top on the backs of the American family. When I questioned the decision regarding pregnant Barbie, I was told that "hundreds" of my neighbors had come in and complained that she was "gross" and "offensive." However, she sold out in all the stores in our area during a "slow" holiday season. Perhaps this decision went deeper. Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that when thousands of delighted little girls lifted off Barbie mom's plastic tummy, they found--not a mass of tissue as they had been told--but a baby. A frightened pro-choice group realized this was a secret revealed that might hinder their agenda. I did forget an item on my list of obscene articles currently being sold at Wal-Mart--maternity clothes. The truly obscene material that they are pushing is hypocrisy. Check out walmartvswomen.com to see how they treat women. ...... I'm interested in the hypocrisy, not in the gender-ism of it all. They have banned mags like Stuff, Maxim, etc. - so it's a fuzzy argument, but aren't all arguments fuzzy? Gender-ism does play a role here, though, doesn't it? |

I find the whole ordeal humorous. I honestly didnt see the need for a pregnant barbie, but since it is there, screw it, sell it!
It isnt obscene, and neither is the SI swimsuit edition in my opinion! |
To me this would seem like a family values deram. MARRIED Barbie, starting a FAMILY. I can't comprehend how this could be construed as obscene.

it's bull shit.
a pregnant barbie is not obscene! gimme a break. obsecene as defined by the supreme court is something w/ an unnatural interest in sex. (or somehting of that sort) i dont even see a reference to sex w/ a pregnant barbie! sex is OVER, and now she's pregnant, it's reality |
I think this is just a bunch of over protective parents that want to try to control what other parents do with thier children just like with video games and such. They figure they complain get it off the shelfs so no one can have it since thier kids shouldn't. I personaly see nothing wrong with it little girls play with dolls, some of thier dolls are babies that they feed and put to bed, some of thier dolls have babies that they feed and put to bed, now they have dolls that can have a baby then so on. It not only makes the learning process easier but they can have fun while they learn.

Geez, my 6 year old got one of these for her birthday. It's not obscene in any way, shape, or form. I guess people want it to come with a marriage certificate so they can be sure it's not a - gasp - unwed mother .

I don't think it is obscene at all but I don't think I would want my Daughter to have one...I really don't know why...
Although, the moment she sees it, she will want it, and knowing me, I will buy it for her! |
Apparently, the people in that neighbourhood still must believe in the stork bringing babies to people out of the blue sky.
Does gender-ism play a role here? Of course it does. You don't see the Ken doll on the shelves there do you,..why he's out making a living to support his lovely pregnant wife. |
I can't see a problem with a pregnant Barbie doll and I can't really see how it could be offensive. Are these same people offended by baby dolls? Where do they tell their kids the baby dolls come from?
As for they hypocrisy of Wal-Mart well, they've demonstrated that several times. They have just recently decided to pull replica toy guns from their shelves and yet they still sell real guns in their stores (at least as far as I know they do [in the states of course...not in Canada]). |
It is getting beyond tiresome with these self-righteous fundamentalists trying to tell everyone else how they should live their lives. It is getting downright dangerous. When does it end?

Until Wal-Mart is closed on Sunday (as per the Ten Commandments), I will refuse to believe anything they do is for any reason other than profit.
Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday. THEY, I believe, are more interested in their Christian morals than Wal-Mart ever will be. Chick-fil-A gives up a day of profits (on a weekend, no less) every week, simply because their founder and owner believe that they shouldn't work on a Sunday. Wal-Mart would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS close ALL their stores for a day for ANY reason. -Mikey |

that pic of the barbie looks ok, so they really dont have any reason. but whatever they want. i guess they only make a big deal about it for all those people that feel that they shouldn't carry it but whatever.

unless it comes with stirrups and an afterbirth I can see no reason why a pregnant barbie is obscene.
Walmart is stupid. and after I go buy some cheap stuff I'll never go there again! (till I need some more stirrups) |
i saw that doll on daytime tv (arr... i'm a bum...great!), and i dont see anything wrong about it. i mean, theres doctor barbie, teacher barbie, vet barbie, dancer barbie, artist barbie, sports barbie. they have a father +son set sold together, why not a preggers barbie?
