Flame On: Web Rage!

This article SOURCE was on the BBC today:

Internet user admits 'web-rage'

An internet user has been found guilty of what police said was Britain's first "web-rage" attack.

Paul Gibbons, 47, tracked down John Jones using details obtained online after the pair exchanged insults in an internet chatroom, a court heard.

The pair met in an online chatroom

He travelled 70 miles to Mr Jones' home in Clacton, Essex, and beat him up with a pickaxe handle in December 2005.

Gibbons, of Southwark, south London, admitted unlawful wounding and will be sentenced on 7 November.

Threatening exchanges

The pair met in an internet chatroom called Yahoo, Islam 10 as both had an interest in the Muslim faith, the Old Bailey was told.

Their exchanges soured after Gibbons accused Mr Jones of spreading rumours about him.

"There was an exchange of views between the victim and the defendant which were threatening on both sides," said prosecutor Ibitayo Adebayo.

Gibbons, a man with a violent past, traced Mr Jones to his home using personal details about himself that he had put online.

Cut with a knife

Gibbons arrived at Mr Jones' home armed and accompanied by another man carrying a machete, the court heard.

Mr Jones, whose partner and three children were in the house, opened the door holding a knife for protection, said Mr Adebayo.

A fight broke out during which Mr Jones was disarmed and beaten with the pickaxe handle and cut with the knife.

Gibbons fled after the victim's partner called for help. Mr Jones suffered cuts to his head, neck and hands.

Identity safety

Det Cons Christopher Creagh, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "This is the first instance of a web-rage attack."

Det Sgt Jean-Marc Bazzoni, of Essex Police, added the case demonstrates the importance of protecting one's identity on the internet.

"Mr Jones had posted pictures of his family on the web and had chatted to Gibbons on an audio link," he said.

"It demonstrates how easily other users can put two and two together and also shows how children could also find themselves in danger."

Now, I've seen my fair share of flame wars, but I've never seen it come to real blows before.

What's interesting is that several people I've talked to about it (on other boards and in RL) have made comments about it being because the Yahoo! group in question was about religeon - I don't buy that, but it's not a shock that it's being spun that way.

Anyone ever come across anything like this in RL?

Just another example of why some people need to chill out. I am amazed what people allow to control them. As long as people are unable to control themselves we will see this kind of thing.

Normally there isn't enough personal information to find where the other person lives.

I've heard of things like this with online gaming, and religous debates can become quite personal. Unfortunately, its a believable circumstance.

Ditto.

You know there's something wrong with the world when you have to be worried about being too good at cs

I've never had it out face to face with somebody from the internet, but I did have some chick threaten to hunt me down and beat my ass years for reasons I know longer remember.

I called her on her bluff and told her where I was going to be that weekend, even packed my camera so I could pictures of the person.

She never showed up, nor did she ever mention it again as she just disappeared from the site we were both hanging out on.

I've never experienced rage....actually, kind of the opposite after certain...uh...photos were seen...I removed them after someone reminded me they were there, but I still have to be on my guard and it was probably too late anyway.
We tend to forget how easy it is to be found with just one slip-up; I try to fake my name now on things and I don't use the same nick on every site ( I think I have about 3 or 4 nicknames now) but I know there's still a few real-name registrations lingering.
A site I frequent is known for getting down and dirty; it has a forum strictly for that. I know it's a joke and treat it as such, but there are some in there who are really off their meds big time. Playing with their heads may or may not set them off, but so far I haven't been threatened or stalked and until that happens, I'll continue to practice my Queen Bitchiness on them.

I have only wanted to beat down one individual on the web... she is the only person I have ever called a certain bad word that starts with C and rhymes with punt. If I had run across her IRL while we were exchanging blows online, I would be in jail right now.

ROFL.

On the original topic, people need to chill the fuck out. Seriously.

I've seen people post real names addresses and workplace details during flame wars, but never seen it get to a physical attack.

One group I'm in has had regular meetings in RL. I've known people that have met, enjoyed each other's company - even dated - then come to be the bitterest enemies online over issues of name calling and (I kid you not) whether it is ok to quote posts from one forum area into another forum area on the same site.

I think there's something about the text medium on screen that allows people to vent their spleen in ways that they would never do in person.

I have grown to imagine to myself that I am face to face with the person and reading my post to them before I post insults - if nothing else, reducing an argument to offensive language tends to remove your support.

actually it's quite easy. People give up lots of information about themselves when "getting to know" someone else.
