I mean, if is just so that the troops can have something better than their rations while they are there, it seems fine with me, but I think it's crap if fast food joints get set up else where in Iraq... unless the Iraqis want it...?

Because if so, you didn't understand it.

1) Fast food has nothing to do with the war. It has everything to do with good old fashioned capitalism. Are you also upset that enterprising Iraqis have been selling the troops cigarettes?

2) The two franchise owners appear to be Kuwati and they saw a golden (arches) opportunity.

3) There is no 'preference' being given to these guys. Again, some Kuwati's saw opportunity in the time honored tradition of catering to the army.

4) LOL Obesity. Maybe you and I would get fat on a diet of big macs, but not your average grunt in the field. These guys will LOSE weight on 2 MRE's a day, where as you and I would likely GAIN weight. (One MRE has about 2000 calories plus or minus a few hundred.)

I don't see them getting much money from this unless they're looking towards a long term plan of keeping it there. With the troops moving so often, they'll only pass one of these facilities every so often, not to mention how long the building will take. I don't see how they're going to be making money solely off of allied soldiers?

Well, if it does, just imagine all the lawsuits...

I just find it rather amusing in a cynical ironic kind of way... we've got our news crews with our troops, giving away hints about their positions which are supposed to be secret, and we've got fast food in the military bases before they have good bathrooms, showers, and humanitarian aid comes in. Go figure.

seems just like it should be, seeing as the government costs for making other selections for soldiers to eat are so high that it makes sense to outsource to a third party. Seems okay when private companies do it, but when the government does it everyone seems to cry foul.

It's funny - you go to Madrid and there are hardly any McDs or Burger Kings. But there are restaurants, bars and cafes everywhere (it must have one of the highest concentrations in the world). The folks who live ther simplay can't understand why you would eat teh food from McDs or Burger King when you can get proper food so easily.

Also, I think there is only 1 or 2 Starbuck's in Madrid too. All the Cafes have coffee machines and know how to make it (since before Starbucks was even an idea in someones head)
