Has Anybody ever figured out the water jug question in Die Hard 3?

They've got a 3 gallon and a 5 gallon jug. How the hell did they get 4 gallons into the 5 gallon jug? Never been able to figure it out.

Fill five, fill three with five. Now two gallons in five. Dump three, pour the two gallons from five into three. Now two gallons in three. Fill five. Now five gallons in five, two gallons in three. Top off three with five, which means you move one gallon from the five into the three. Now four gallons left in five.

Damn it! You beat me to it, Kadath. Well played. Birds of the feather flock together, so do pigs and swine. Rats and mice have their chance as well as I have mine.

Um... they do figure it out in the movie. They describe the steps... did you just see it the once and forget?

They never explain the first steps. They start with 2 gallons in 5.

Yep, I think this same thing was required in KOTAR II - good puzzle :D

It's the new math.

yeah, the creative editing and fast cutting in the movie left it very confusing.

VERY confusing editing for a non math-type person. Thanks for the solution, guys.

As a math teaher, my step-mom used to get frustrated every time she watched that movie trying to figure it out. She never explained it if/when she figured it out, so thank you. It all makes perfect sense now.
