Let's Plan: Las Vegas TFP get-together.

So far:
Date: Oct 24-26
Where: ?
What: ?

World's King 05-12-2003 09:34 PM

VEGAS BABY... VEAGS.

rogue49 05-13-2003 05:27 AM

A Vegas flight is affordable from ALL cities.
It's the miracle of that town.

Someone just needs to find a decent hotel with good rates,
and a place for everyone to gather.

phredgreen 05-13-2003 04:52 PM

you already know i'm there... ganguro? you gonna be relocated by then?

Angel 05-14-2003 08:49 AM

I'm there for this one without a doubt!
I wish I were a little closer to help organize this one.

I would recommend trying to stay somewhere that isn't directly on the strip. The prices are a little lower and it is easier to get rooms.

Palace Station has decent accomodations...just a thought.
That is a good time of year to plan there. Not too crowded.

KYBOrulz 05-14-2003 03:26 PM

Man i could be in vegas in 5 hours! no problem! Just set it up!

snowy 05-14-2003 09:35 PM

Sounds like a Christmas present my parents can pay for...;) Could we possibly pick a date where people won't be in school? Maybe more towards Christmas? Early December?

personally I was thinking more like trying to pull it up before everyone heads back to school. Travel will be expensive around XMas also.

~springrain 05-15-2003 07:45 AM

excellent idea Halx... *smile*

Willow and i are relatively new to the TFP... but if we can make it happen (ie- kids, work, etc.)... count us in!

snowy 05-15-2003 02:17 PM

good idea juan...i just don't want to miss it because of classes :( Although skipping is always an option...;)

Minx 05-15-2003 02:18 PM

I'd be into a Vegas thing if I have the coin for the airfare, but I agree with juanvaldes that it would be more expensive around X-Mas. And yes, Angel is right on the mark with staying just off the strip - way cheaper and still right in the thick of things.
Woo vive las vegas baby.......

Halx 05-15-2003 03:27 PM

right now, I'd rather not go earlier than the last two weekends of Oct because of personal reasons.

So far we got:
some place off the strip

ok.. can we do this any faster, and can someone help me out?

Angel 05-15-2003 05:59 PM

Halx my dear, you are looking 5 months out. I am certain things are going to fall into place.

I'm quietly on the side looking at some options but I can't give an honest committment at this point to help out....but I AM thinking about it and what I may be able to do.

The October time frame is ideal as it is post summer, pre Christmas and easier to get rooms.

I will keep my eyes and ears peeled for good rate packages on rooms and private party halls. I know I won't be able to organize this event but I'd like to try and help out where I can.

i can second that... i have three kids at home... and Willow travels for work... A LOT... but we are both completely into the idea.

i'll keep my eyes and ears open... do so searching on rates and possible group rate packages and pass them on if that helps...

snowy 05-15-2003 10:52 PM

Even if I don't go, I can definitely help out. My aunt lives in the Vegas area (Boulder City) and my family will be down there over the summer for her wedding, so I can scope locations out then. I love traveling and love organizing stuff, so any way I can help I will. :)

Preliminary plane ticket searches show similar rates for October vs. early December. There is a $5 difference between the two--October being slightly cheaper.

World's King 05-15-2003 11:51 PM

I'm already saving up for hookers.

snowy 05-16-2003 12:53 AM

On the hotel front...a double room at Palace Station in late October goes for $89 a night.

There are cheaper hotels to be had in Las Vegas, but Palace Station is pretty nice--it's like one of the big hotels on the Strip without the Strip, and without the price of the Strip. It all depends on what everyone wants.

The sooner we get on this and people commit to it, the cheaper it will be for all concerned.

BlueBongo 05-20-2003 03:48 PM

I think it should be in the middle of November... planning time off work and all. (Plus I'm picky and wanna spend my birthday in Vegas (Nov. 19th)).... so I'd prefer that if possible. Besides gotta schedule the time off way in advance.

That way reservations can be cheaper.. I bet if we booked a solid # of rooms at a hotel way in advance it may even be cheaper.

Just a thought.

PLUS, I'm sure phredgreen and I could put something together... we don't live close too close to Vegas.. I'm sure between to the two of us we can figure out.. hotels/rates/places to go and whatnot... (course haven't discussed it with phred.. but I know he's interested in helping put this thing together)... but I know a lot of in's and out's of some places in Vegas.. may be able to get cheap rates and whatever else... (just another thought)..

I'd really be interested in meeting a lot of the people from here. It's like a big ol' family.

Hope we can get this together soon so people can start to make some plans. But I'm all about anytime between mid-Oct-mid-Nov... not around Christmas because that'll be the busy season at work. :)

Ganguro 05-21-2003 09:53 AM

HA! i didnt see this until today..
(read the sticky notes kiddies:D)

I'll be relocated as of june 1 so October shouldn't be a big deal for me(or Peutetre), but others who have school and such have voiced an interest in an earlier date. When we get down there.. we'll look around for you and update this thread with info we find. Personally speaking.. I am not a Party Throwing guy.. so I may not be the best candidate for planning fun stuff to do. My idea of fun is Gameworks, Cheesy casinos/ bars, goofing off and eating dinner with friends. I'm not too big on the gambling, excessive drinking, and stippers that Vegas is known for.. but i can be persuaded ;)

A good place to start looking at hotels and other travel deals is http://www.vegas.com and http://www.cheapovegas.com. Also check out your local travel agencies. Since I have relatives in the area I dont stay at the hotels, but I did stay at the Stratosphere for a week a few years ago, and it wasnt too expensive and fairly nice. Travel around the strip, and off strip is relatively simple and free (take the casino shuttles or walk). A Vegas get together would be a fun thing though.

BigJayz 05-22-2003 03:36 PM

I don't know if I'd be able to make it or not, but I cool place off the strip to stay is The Four Queens downtown on Freemont. If you call and talk to a guy by the name of Joey D. (Di Poppollo) you might be able to get some great group rates. He is a pit boss there and he used to do promotions for a casino night company I work for from time to time where he would just give out free nights to people there. He's hooked me up a couple times. I'm not on a first name basis with him, and he probably wouldnt remember me, but if someone wants to call him and ask it couldn't hurt.

But with that said, Downtown is the way to go, less crowds, cheaper tables, more smut!

meanSpleen 05-24-2003 12:40 AM

Ah hell no. I say we all stay at the Rio, and each person get a suite to themselves. :)

Hmmm, I may have to show up at this one. But I'm a terrible planner, so I'll agree with whatever you all say.

JStrider 05-24-2003 12:59 AM

id like to... but october is during school... itd just be pretty hard to justify the expense...

i mean someone said $89 for a room for a night...
so saying a person would fly up saturday morning.... and leave sunday sometime...
then theres the plane flight... i doubt could be had for less the $150... it just seems to add up real quick...easily $300 assuming some other money for dinners and etc...

i just cant spend that...at this point in time...

BlueBongo 05-24-2003 08:26 AM

Ganguro- you throw stealing lawn gnomes into that mix of things to do.. and that would be a great night! When I go I really wanna check out the star trek bar... I am not a big trekky but it's always been there and I never know where anything else is. Gameworks is a good idea, I'm sure the one in Vegas is much better than the one here.

I suppose the questions is how many people to expect ... doesn't sound like many at the moment though.

BlueBongo 05-24-2003 08:34 PM

Hrmm... best group rates are at Circus Circus, Excaliber, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay.... I hate clowns.. but I can handle circus circus... that hotel is by far the cheapest group rate I've been able to find. BUT, The luxor isn't bad... never been there.. might be fun.

Just some stuff I've checked into.

Lemme know what ya think.

phredgreen 05-24-2003 09:01 PM

f you're a guest at the luxor, you get into RA free... i think i can handle that. shall we live a little, folks?

rubicon 05-27-2003 10:15 AM

Vegas is a great idea. However, the cost of airfare, hotel, and meals/fun might be prohibitive for some people. On the other hand, Vegas would be cool for a "national" TFP gathering.

For a West Coast gig, maybe a day/evening out between LA and San Diego?

Let's get on it and book a whole schwack of rooms. I like the "buying in bulk" makes it cheaper theory as far as rooms go....after all people, I'm in Canada...figure the exchange rate into the equation and I'll have to sell a freakin kidney on e-bay to fund this. Sooooo, if I can do it - any of you can!

~springrain 05-27-2003 03:10 PM

i agree with Minx... cost will be prohibitive for anyone who is not in the immediate area...
so if we're talking travel, for most of the participants, Vegas is truly one of the most affordable places to travel to...

add to that, the fact that Vegas has something to offer nearly anyone and everyone... and it truly never sleeps... it's the perfect place for a "get together :D

can't wait!

Halx 05-27-2003 03:34 PM

So can we get a show of hands?

How is Oct 24th-26th? Friday-Saturday-Sunday? Show up any day, meet with people.

Angel 05-27-2003 03:43 PM

*Angel shows her hand and says "I'm in!"*

Consider it dated. How can I not? It's a 6 hour drive and I'm over due, haven't been there for a while.

~springrain 05-27-2003 03:49 PM

*writing it on the calendar*... add two more to the count... whoever is keeping count... :D

once we get a quasi "head count" i'd be willing to call make some phone calls regarding what group discounts they'll offer.

snowy 05-27-2003 10:36 PM

::raises hand:: I'll fundraise for this any way I know how...short of selling myself on the street corner :D

Halx 05-28-2003 09:16 AM

I think this should be enough incentive for a lot of people to make the journey - all ready have three wonderful ladies booked!

bondagegirl 05-31-2003 11:46 PM

Hey guys, I really want to be in, I'm not sure about the dates though... school and everything. But it's close and I can drive woo hoo!! I really think we could stay on the strip for cheap i.e. Circus circus. I stayed there once for 60 something dollars a night!
How can I help?
Whats the main reason for going in late Oct.? What about after Thanksgiving, it should be dead! (and I'll be 21 on the 21st, too:D)

Halx 06-01-2003 10:46 AM

keeps gettin' better.

has anybody done some research yet?

Are there any plans for how we're gonna meet and what we're gonna do?

~springrain 06-01-2003 01:41 PM

Hal... i've been thinking about that... but no, sorry to say i haven't made the actual phone calls yet.

Was out of town last week... and still in "regroup" mode.

When i call around to hotels/casinos about rates, i also plan to ask about "group parties" and if there is anyway we could organize a couple of things as a group event... even if it's reserving a certain amount of seats for shows and what-not.

i promise i haven't forgotten... just getting some RL stuff checked off my list before i continue...

i can't wait... Vegas is a blast! :D

maybe i'll start a Poll thread to get an official head count for Yes, No's and Maybe's... that will help in regards to planning for group rates and what not. what do you all think?

Minx 06-01-2003 05:56 PM

I think it looks like you are our official hostess! :)

I am definately in....can't wait for it and hope all the rest of the west coasters will try to make it.
I was thinking about it today and it would be good to do a group thing - they must cater to that and we could maybe even get a "courtesy" or meeting room.
Personally, I think this will be great - wish I could help out but I'm pretty far away for that.

duckznutz 06-02-2003 02:19 PM

Booked a suite at the Luxor . . (both my girlfriends want to come) . . how will we recognise you guys? Lets all agree to wear smart suits and purple ties!

Cynthetiq 06-03-2003 05:59 AM

damn.. having a condo out there and also my parent's 2nd house.. it would be a blast... alas.. I cannot make it...

I'm finally taking the wife out to Europe for our honeymoon. Three weeks of touring Europe... Finland, Vienna, Spain.

rogue49 06-03-2003 07:40 AM

here's a suggestion...
it will probably happen that many will still get different hotel to stay at, even at group rates.

Make a certain place & time,
that TFP members meet each day and/or night.
That way people who have shown up later can still hook up with you all,
or if they have different interests briefly, then join at a more convenient time.

Maybe have one person who is the main contact with a cell phone.
And updates on the TFP as to what group event are happening.

~springrain 06-03-2003 07:47 AM

true enough... and unless we get numbers over 50... the "group rate" will probably not be significantly less...

i like the idea of a main contact... and perhaps a "main meeting area" where people could meet up everyday at a certain time...

that way, if some want to go off and do their own thing... there is always a "homebase"to check in at before the evening festivities take off...

-Ever- 06-03-2003 10:14 AM

Shit, I'm going to be in London all semester :( :D :(

Haha!

We'll get a bunch of contact info as the time approaches.

Minx 06-03-2003 12:55 PM

Springrain, I like your idea of starting a "yes, no" thread so we can get some definite numbers and then we can really start to plan it.
Personally...I can't wait....already saving my pennies for plane fare!

Ganguro 06-03-2003 11:45 PM

aigoo... hey ya'll since im here already let me call around this week and i should hopefully have some answers by the weekend.
What evactly are we looking for? possible group rates? meeting room booked, or just general hotel rates, etc..
I dont think we're going to have enough folks to merit a meeting room or anything super formal like that. It's not worthwile to the hotels..

Also..we really should look at another date.. SOMEONE wants it by his *ahem* birthday.. that's why the tentative date is mid/late oxtober. :D

Halx 06-04-2003 10:15 AM

but of course.. any later and it'll be too cold

i wonder if ganguro will make it.. :hmm:

cj2112 06-08-2003 06:40 PM

It's probable....Depends on how busy I am at work. Things begin to slow down right around then, but we've got a couple irons in the fire that may keep us very busy through next winter

Willowsr 06-08-2003 07:52 PM

I am actually headed to Vegas in 2 weeks (the 26-29) for a gambling trip with some friends from work. Luckily it was paid for a few months ago cause we are into a tough time for bills right now.

As for the fall trip, I voted mabye (probably No). This was because the times for any trip for Jinger (my wife) and I would be dependent on when we could find a multi day babysitter for my son. Having said that, we were thinking of heading to Vegas in the fall (either early Sept or mid Oct). I'll chat with my wife and see what we can arrange.

Minx 06-12-2003 09:41 AM

I can imagine it would be a blast. I'd love to meet everyone too. Unfortunately there are only certain times when we can travel down there and it may not be on that particular weekend. Currently we are trying to determine if it is better for us to go Thurs to Sun or Sun to Thurs as Sun to Thurs would mean our son could be in his standard daycare for most of the day and it would be easier on my parents.

But I don't need to bore you with the details. I'll see what I can do...:)

I live here, so i'll see ya'll whenever you decide to come out..
Folks check with your travel agents on deals.
Expedia has a deal good for travel in september, and im sure there will be more like it, so join Travelocity, expedia, and orbitz mailinglists and see what is being offered over the months. You can get a good package here for 2 or 3 days for about 300 usually. My gf and I flew out here round trip from Chicago for $175 last december, it's all about your timing when booking tickets and such. Also i'll keep you guys updated if i find any deals at the hotels..

Just plan something and announce it. People will show up if you announce it enough in advance.

Sorry to the rest, but no other TFP Meet will EVER compare to TFP Las Vegas 2003!
If YOU aren't there... you know the rest...!

Up here (In God's Country!:D ), we have a chain of grocery/dept. type stores (Fred Meyer) that have a supervised children's area- you drop the lil' couch monkeys off, and pick 'em up when you're done shopping. You have anything like that, down south?;)

I'm not sure, the airfare's cheap, but hotel stay isn't so cheap.

gamble enough and the rooms are free. I wish it were during the week. Weekends are hard to get away but I will try to be there. I did not read all the posts yet, is there a place picked out yet?? If not, maybe I can get one of my hosts to hook me up with a cool setup. I know I have lost and won enough cash that they should take care of me since I alway have a big suite compted whenever I go.

richeee 06-27-2003 09:08 PM

Go_AVS, I don't believe any one site has been chosen yet. Any suggestions on rooms/hotel, meeting location, must see/must do?
A couple few of us are roller coaster junkies, so the Strat is a must!
"...gamble enough and the rooms are free..." how much is enough?
Thanks for your help!

I can't go, but I'm going to agree with phred on this one. The Luxor is a great place. It also has a monorail that takes you to Excaliber and Mandalay Bay (if I remember correctly).

Ganguro 06-28-2003 02:26 PM
