iPod Toilet

The iPod that let's you roll with it
By IAN DRURY, Daily Mail 22:29pm 14th June 2006

It gives a completely new meaning to the phrase 'rock 'n' roll'. For boffins have invented a cutting-edge gadget combining a portable music player and a toilet paper dispenser.

The state-of-the-art device - called an iCarta - makes it easier for people to listen to beats while using the bathroom.

It is designed, according to the US manufacturers, to "enhance your experience in the smallest room".

The gadget, which costs around $99, or £54, merges an iPod docking station with a loo roll dispenser.

After music lovers have downloaded songs from the internet on their iPod, they can place it in a socket in the top of the dispenser.

Then while sitting on the toilet, using the shower or luxuriating in a bubble bath, they can listen to their favourite tunes.

The device delivers high-quality sounds from moisture-resistant speakers, according to the manufacturer Atech Flash Technology.

It also re-charges the iPod while playing songs - either pre-programmed or a random selection.

The iCarta, which is 8 inches wide, 7 inches deep and three inches high and designed to be mounted on the bathroom wall, is powered by rechargeable batteries.

It is the latest hi-tech contraption that features an MP3 player.

Manufacturers have already produced a robotic dogs that 'dances' when someone connects it to a music player and DJs are beginning to forsake vinyl records and CDs for mixing desks which use iPods.

And in April, the Mail told how the latest model of the classic Swiss Army Knife featured a detachable MP3 player.

It meant owners of the state-of-the-art knife could store and play up to 250 songs downloaded from the Internet.

One website which reviews the latest technology described the iCarta as "one of the stranger iPod accessories we've ever seen".

But it is certainly ideal for anyone wanting to listen to rock band Oasis' number one single 'Roll With It'.

Some iPod accessories seem to be rather odd, idiotic or just downright pointless (what's the deal with the iPod sock). But this is absolutly rediculous. And in my opinion the silliest thing about this is it recharges the battery. Honestly if you're going to take a dump and reading material isn't enough and you just must have your iPod playing music while you're crapping, what kind of a dump are you making that would require you to recharge the battery while you're sitting on the toilet?

Aside from using this as a means to test the theory of the brown noise, I really don't see a use for this. Some people say that the iPod craze has become to much, but I think the problem is not the iPod, but rather the iPod accessories.

I think I'll just stick with the TuneBuckle while it's hanging around my feet in the bathroom.

/sarcasm

Is there no place I can claim sanctuary from these omnipresent doodads o' Hell?

blahblah454 06-15-2006 09:20 PM

Yes that is alittle much, but listening to music while showering can be fun sometimes. But thats what portable sterios are for right? Right?

And iPod socks? What the hell?

I can see how this might be useful in a BATHroom (ie when you are having a bath). It makes the install easy in a small space.

I saw a guy on TV who built his mp3 player into an old art-deco stand up radio. The whole thing lit up and the old knobs were actually functional.

Now THAT is a cool accessory.

CSflim 06-16-2006 05:28 AM

Huh?
Fair enough; listen to your ipod while you're on the toilet. But what's wrong with using the headphones like usual? Why would someone need ipod speakers for the toilet?

Sounds like an onion article that got taken the wrong way, or some Daily Mail writer that came across an image from a photoshop contest.

But it checks out. Company's website here:

product in question here:

My guess is that Atech Flash don't actually expect anyone to buy this product - except maybe as a rather expensive gag present. Instead they're using this as a rather effective method of free publicity so they can improve the sales of their more conventional iPod accessories.

This could be useful in your personal bathroom, I was picturing it in my head in stalls in a public bathroom, which was a much funnier idea. Can you imagine the myriad of music coming from each individual stall?!?! Anywho, i'm more inclined to just put one of those alarm clock ipod docks in the bathroom for that purpose, than i'd be to buy this.

rainheart 06-16-2006 05:47 AM

Should've called it the iCrap

I hated this part of the article the most. Grrr I'll just stop before I pull the soapbox out.

Whatever happened to the love and respect for tradition? Vinyl owns Digital.

title of this thread should be iPod Toilet Paper Roll Holder.

I expected to see a musical toilet that played MP3s.

I'm disappointed.

Yeah, but imagine how uncomfortable the bass rumble would be after a while.

Nah, the bass would help get things moving!

Regarding the OP, while I can see the benefit of a shower ipod dock, I wouldn't want my MP3 player anywhere near my toilet paper. Yuck!

AFuckingMen!

Anyway, back on topic I suppose. I can see how it would be great while you were in the shower, getting ready etc; but I don't need one because I just play my main stereo loud enough to hear it when I'm in there :D

Unless of course you are clumsy enough to drop your iPod into the toilet and then flush it away :D

Yea, you know.. there's one important thing missing from that that a DJ needs to be called a DJ.. and thats DISKS. there's no disks with that, you're just pushing buttons. and that makes you a BJ and not a DJ.
