Fathers Day Ideas

I'm 25 YO and I'm looking for some ideas on what I can do for dad this year.. he's the type of person that has just about EVERYTHING he wants...and if he doese'nt have it.. he buys it... The remaining items are way too expensive for me to afford. So...being that I'm moving out of state this year and probably won't be around next year, I wanted to take dad out to New York City and do something fun.. but... I'm not really sure what to do... We live close to the city, so we have done all the usual tourist attractions and what not... He's a computer/technology type guy, and I'm not quite sure where that leaves me...

Any Ideas?

Take him to a baseball game
Take him to the driving range or batting cages to shoot some balls or hit some balls (chelsea piers has this, it's a little expensive, but it's nice)
Take him out for a beer.
Take him fishing - or one of the chartered fishing boats (I know they exist on Long Island cuz i've caught blue fish that way..)

Basically - -you're an adult, he's an adult -- get him to know you as an adult... Time is the greatest gift anyone can give.

Relax and just enjoy doing something with him. What you do isn't as important as doing it. My oldest and I took a road trip last October and it was the best time we could have had. Take him someplace he mahaps not usually consider going (concert, museum, Broadway show).

My dad is the same as your dad...he has everything he needs, and he doesn't want "stuff". We always take him to breakfast, have a nice chat, and we buy him some good beer because he definitely loves his beer. He is happy as a clam about spending family time and making one less run to the liquor store. I agree with mal...time is the best gift for almost all occasions.

My dad just hates when his kids buy him stuff for Father's Day. He does, however, love our annual brunch. We pick somewhere to go and just sit around, eat good food, and talk all afternoon. A few years back I found a bunch of old photos from my Dad's childhood. I put together an album full of pictures of him as he grew up (as a child, in high school, in the navy), pictures of his parents and brothers, and pictures of all his daughters growing up. He'd never had all the pictures together and to this day it's the only present that he's ever seemed to really enjoy. I don't think you have to buy your Dad anything, just spend some time with him or do something thoughful for him, he'll appreciate it. :)

I've had some people bring some old snapshots into my shop to frame. Dig some nice nostalgia out of a shoebox somewhere and freshen it up for him.

I like that my kids make me breakfast... but they are 3 and 11.

I know my father-in-law likes to just hang out with us on Father's Day. He doesn't expect anything other than the gift of time with family (now there's a Hallmark card in the making).

Speaking from experience as a father with two sons, one of which is your age, I can confirm the good advice you've already been given. Especially if you are moving away, your time is the best gift you can give. Pick an activity where you get to talk to each other a lot...I like to walk the local golf course with my kids. It's also a gift that gives back. My father passed away in 1999, and while I'll never stop missing him, I'm grateful for all the time we had together.

Just sit in the sun and have a beer together. That's what my dad and I do on Father's Day, and it seems to make him happier than any silly present--though I usually buy the beer :D

Recreate a moment from childhood IE: he took you fishing at lake winnepasake... take him instead.

A magazine subscription? A hobby topic with a year round gift.

What would you like to get on your special day? Do it for him!
