Given the chance to help a wealthy Nigerian
After years of hearing about this email scam I finally got it sent to me. For those who aren't familiar with this scam here it is.

We used to get snail mail versions of these in my office years ago. We'd get about three or four a year. Now I get three or four a month via email.
Playing on people's greed is such an easy way to scam.

I've had several of these. I must be lucky or something. You might enjoy this site. This guys messes with the scammers and some of it gets pretty funny.

We'd get that one via e-mail and fax... my favorite one is the e-mail that your friends send around saying that Applebee's is tracking the message (so don't clean up the e-mail, just forward it as is!), and if you send it to X number of people, you'll get a gift certificate via e-mail to eat at Applebee's. I went to Applebee's website when I got this the first time, because I didn't know how they were going to track it (unless someone sent it to them), and they had a pop-up saying that this was a hoax.

I had someone try to "buy" my classified ad item by sending me a check for several thousand dollars over the amount agreed to sell. I was then to send the difference back via western union.
he fedexed the check to me and i never cashed it. he was going to call the FBI on me. I just stated that I was not going to send any funds until after the check cleared. he never contacted me again. greed makes people do dumb things.

Cynthetiq - a case JUST LIKE THAT was on the People's Court last week. The step-mother was suing her step-son because he had signed a check over to her that was acquired via the same situation, and she had cashed it for him with her bank account. The step-son lost, but they were both found to be stupid to have fallen for that scheme in the first place. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....

I wish somebody would come up with a good way to get spammers. At one point, the state I lived in had a special task force and told people to send the info there. I did for a while, then they stopped responding after they had a big bust.
I think the most amazing scam on the internet isn't really a scam. If you put together a decent website (ie: Ebola Monkey), pretty women will send pictures of them naked holding up your URL on a sign.

Some of the fishing scams are funny because of their poor efforts at fearmongering. They go something like this:
"URGENT ATTENTION NEEDED - Paypal Account Fraudulent Activity Please use the link below to access your Paypal account to investigate potential misuse of your account." Clicking on the link creates a window that is a spot-on replica of the actual page, but the information is, of course, sent to a third party who then uses it to actually hijack your account. Delicious irony, no?

I was scammed last year. I nearly lost 1500 dollars. I was buying an SLR Digital Camera and they wanted me to send the money via Wester Union and it was all done through an 'escrow' set up, but the next day I was just getting a little uneasy about all of it and did a research on that specific escrow site and it came up as being fradulent, so I called up Western Union and cancelled the transaction. Never got an e-mail back from the person.

I got an interesting variation on the Nigerian spam today: it was a letter from some "Reverend" who was interested in starting a church for foreigners in the US. Kind of weird because it had my first and last name in the letter itself, so that's why I took a look at it... and saw that everything was misspelled, including the word "internate" (internet). They wanted me to reply and say that I would donate funds to help establish this "church" (which also got mispelled as "churd" at one point). I deleted it very quickly, but got a very good laugh out of it in the meantime. I guess they are appealing to... spiritual greed??

While it's be nice to make 2 million dollars a week, I think i'd have to pass on that one - it's really too much effort stuffing all that money in the mattress...
I've been around the internet way too long... my favorite email is not one of scamming, but of trying to be helpful... The Good Times virus was going to be such a malicious virus and you had to forward the email to all your friends to warn them of impending doom...

To be honest I can't say that I like any of them. I have one friend (I guess you could call her a friend) who forwards chain mail like she's desperate for the good luck/love/money that they promise. I get so many every day that I'm just to the point of disgusted whenever I see one and I rarely read them.
As for the Nigerian scam bunk... I don't know why they like me but I get at least one of those a week on average. It's nauseating, especially when I think that they would not continue this if people weren't still falling for it. I can't help but think that sadly the people falling for it probably are the ones who are too stupid to earn much and so they're using money that they need or money they got through welfare to pay these scammers. What's worse - My Dad is just getting to know the internet and he forwards practically EVERYTHING to me. At least I can monitor them receiving any nigerian scam things so they don't get sucked in. I have one junk mail box that gets over 1000 messages every couple days in the bulk mail box. I just dump it all without looking at any of it.

http://www.scamorama.com/ Plenty of email transcripts from different people -- a lot of them Brits, but not all -- who have a great deal of fun twitting the con men and stringing them along, using names like "Mikhail Strogonoff," "Beldar Conehead," "Captain James T. Kirk," and more. And the scammers just don't get it. Pretty funny. (Add: some of the money-transfer scammers are approaching people through chatrooms or IMs, and they have transcripts of some of those encounters, too.) Some of the phising mail are pretty well done, I've recieved a few of the PayPal variety that looked really good. However, there's been a few phishing "attacks" aimed at my bank from (probably) SE Asia, and their Swedish is beyond terrible. You think you've seen some crappy English in phishing mail, but compared to how they butcher Swedish it's nothing.
And people STILL fall for it! I'm ashamed of my countrymen. :P |

I got this one today, and I'm considering responding just to mess with them. It's actually fairly well written and may or may not be Nigerian, but it's pretty clearly a scam, especially if you know anything about FOREX. The idea that you can't lose money should be sign enough to stay away.

Please please stop sending me spam offering to sell me Hoodia. I don't even know what Hoodia is (and I'm not going to look it up), but every time I see the word Hoodia my brain translates it into Hoodsie, and now I want Hoodsie cups. Again.
Yum, Hoodsies.
