Happy Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Anyone have anything festive planned for the day?

I think I'm going to have Mexican food for lunch. That's about it for me

Meditrina 05-05-2006 05:55 AM

History of Cinqo de Mayo
Quote:

Cinco De Mayo or The Fifth Of May, commemorates the defeat of the French army by the Mexicans at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862.

Mexico briefly gained independence from Spain in 1810. There were many internal political takeovers and wars in the country including the Mexican-American War and the Mexican Civil War of 1858. These events wiped out the economy.

During this time Mexico was greatly in debt to several nations who were demanding payment. Mexico stopped making any payment and France decided to use the debt issue to establish its own leadership in Mexico by appointing Archduke Maximilian of Austria as ruler of Mexico.

The French army encountered strong resistance at Loreto and Guadalupe. Lead by General Seguin, a militia of about 4,500 soldiers defeated the French army of 6,500 soldiers.

While the victory was a memorable one for the patriots, it was short lived. Napoleon had found an excuse to send more troops to help Maximilian. A year later, the French were eventually able to depose the Mexican army, take over Mexico City and install Maximilian as ruler as planned
So Mexico didn't pay their bills, France got pissed... there was a battle... Mexico won... France got more pissed than Mexico got their asses kicked...

Let's all drink tequilla!!! I think it's Jose Cuervo's excuse for a holiday...

When do we start celebrating every country's independance day? If we try, I'll bet we can get a holiday every day of the year, of course we'd have to rename the USA to something like France.

/me hangs her head in shame.

I just like to eat and drink. I never thought of it the way you said.

Toaster126 05-05-2006 07:05 AM

Cinco de Mayo is an excuse to think about certain things, eat good food and drink, and be merry, just like every other holiday.

I approve. :)

Y'know what? Me too! So what say you pass one of those enchiladas over this way.

As I understand it, there will be some major celebrating going on in "Little Mexico" down in South Omaha today. Music, native folk dancers, authentic Mexican food...that kind of thing. Not so much different from La Festa Italliana, The Greek Festival, and Germanfest. I think that ol' Bill may have to go watch some pretty senioritas twirl their skirts this evening.

Its like a Hallmark Holiday, only for beer.

ironman 05-05-2006 08:10 AM

I think is time to call Mr. Hankey to once again explain the true spirit of any given celebration...

Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick's Day really aren't all that different.

Pass me a damn Sol and feed me enchiladas!

It took me years to get it into my head that there really are some people that truly like corned beef and cabbage. Bleeech.

I always buy five jars of Mayo and a big loaf of bread. Some thin-sliced luncheon meats and a tomato. I'm set.

What? Am I missing something?

I was thinking of going down to the free health clinic and screaming "La Migra!" "La Migra!"

I might wind up with some more sprinters for the local high school track team.

Have we all forgotten that May 5th is also the anniversary of Napolean's death? When did we lose sight of that? I think its been 185 years.....

Coppertop 05-07-2006 07:51 AM

I had some carne asada tacos for lunch at El Grullense. Mmm, tacos...
