From the Drudge Report:
http://memory.loc.gov/cocoon/ihas/lo...age=1§ion= That's a commissioned version of the athem in Spanish. It's about 85 years old. I think that the term "tempest in a teacup" has already been accurately used to describe this "controversy". The anthem is in the public domain, so anyone changing it up in a commercial recording doesn't need to even pay royalties on it.

Multiculturalism is assinine, and a grave mistake. It doesn't make America stronger but weaker. I'll leave it at that.

It looks like President Bush was caught in a major flip flop on this issue. He recently said "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English" in response to this song coming out now. But during his first Presidential campaign and at his inauguration, he actually had a singer do a Spanish version of the national anthem.

This whole thing is a complete non-issue to me. It's a song, get over the egocentrism - your way is not the only way. Personally, I like Jimi's version the most, but that's just me I suppose.
And what does "No, I do but not enough to do anything about it." (from the poll) mean? |

I just now listened to the link that Cyn provided and I got the same chills up my spine that I get from every respectful interpretation of the national anthem. I don't speak Spanish so I am unable to assess how this interpretation has been altered from the original, but I would welcome hearing the anthem in every language that represents all of our citizens.
Just imagine! A musical venue (concert, cd, whatever) that celebrates our anthem in every language of our "melting pot." Why shouldn't we celebrate our origins along with our country of choice or birth? I think I'll take a drive up to Little Norway and see if they have a version of our anthem |

Even so, while the Inauguration story may not correct, the story about the 2000 campagin is gaining some traction. Today, Scott McClellan denied that President Bush sang along, saying it was absurd since Bush doesn even speak Spanish very well. It's kind of an odd defense for them to take. After all, the singer said that they sang it in "Spanglish", which even Bush would be able to sing along with. I guess singing it in Spanglish is ok while singing in full Spanish is not. |

For example, the news about Rumsfeld getting caught in a lie isn't even in the AP story about it. They left it out and instead just focused on the fact that he was being "heckled" by a former CIA man. Oh, and they had to make sure to include something about how kind and gracious Rumsfeld was in temporarily (long enough for him to come up with a "witty" response) stopping his henchmen from throwing the guy out (did I mention he was a 27-year vet of the CIA?). Anyway, enough about that. Back to being outraged by a song. Last edited by maximusveritas; 05-04-2006 at 06:36 PM.. |
