I think stone's words at the end should be applauded. The show would be offensive if they didn't make fun of one religion. It's pretty much the not so new way of being PC...leave no religion or race unoffended.

Gotta disagree with my hubby on this one - I think Stone called it like it is. Hayes is a hypocrite, and it would be uncharacteristic of the South Park crew to step over it.

Or maybe that show and/or other events related to the issue may have caused Isaac Hayes' beliefs to be profoundly affected?

I would think it more likely that his view simply changed over the period of almost 10 years before I called the man out as a hypocrite. This fallout may have been building up for quite a while. Nevertheless, my perspective on many things have changed based on experiences that personally affected me. It does not mean I'm a hypocrite. It means I've learned from the experience and am probably in better position to express myself on the issue.

Something seems fishy about the timing of this exchange between Hayes, Trey and Matt. The Scientology episode was quite some time ago, Hayes had plenty of time to say something if he was pissed about it. Oh, and by the way, the new season of South Park startes Wednesday. I think it's a publicity stunt.

If the whole thing is honest, Hayes is a dipshit. If it's a publicity stunt, those three are brilliant.

He's helped make fun of of everyone and everything for years but say something about Scientology and he's outta there. I'm sure the powers that be of his religion had some influence in the matter but still that's awfully hipocritical. If anything they just made the problem worse as i'm sure they'll go out of their way now to poke fun at Scientology.

I can tell you, Hayes was very pleased with himself, was in a great mood and, as always, loved his fans' coming up to him and asking him about Chef.

As recently as early January, before his stroke, Hayes defended the "South Park" creators in an interview with “The AV Club,” the serious side of the satirical newspaper, The Onion.

There's more to the article than I've snipped, but these are the high points. I tried to pull up the interview off the Onion, but I didn't have the patience or time to go wading through the archives once I didn't find it immediately. If the quotes later in the Fox article are accurate, then it's very interesting that he'd be ok with the episode in December/January (depending on when the interview took place) and then not ok with it in March. If someone is speaking for him, I have to wonder if they're working in conjunction with Tom Cruise or someone in his "camp". Regardless, controversy like this really only plays into the hands of Parker and Stone, as seen by their press release last week. If I were them, I'd be tossing around ideas for another Scientologist episode and maybe thinking about distributing closet action figures - not actual people, just closets that don't open.

AV Club: They did just do an episode that made fun of your religion, Scientology. Did that bother you?

Hayes: Well, I talked to Matt [Stone] and Trey [Parker] about that. They didn't let me know until it was done. I said, 'Guys, you have it all wrong. We're not like that. I know that's your thing, but get your information correct, because somebody might believe that [expletive], you know?' But I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses and understand what we do. [Laughs.]

The truth is, Hayes has a sly sense of humor and loves everything about "South Park." It’s provided him a much-needed income stream since losing the royalties to the many hits he’s written, such as “Shaft” and “Soul Man,” in the mid-1970s.

Even though he’s one of America’s most prolific hit writers, Hayes has been denied access to profits from his own material for almost 30 years.

But it’s hard to know anything since Hayes, like Katie Holmes, is constantly monitored by a Scientologist representative most of the time. Luckily, at the Blues Ball he was on his own, partying just with family and friends. He was very excited about having gotten married and about the impending birth of a new child.

Friends in Memphis tell me that Hayes did not issue any statements on his own about South Park. They are mystified.

“Isaac’s been concentrating on his recuperation for the last two and a half, three months,” a close friend told me.

Hayes did not suffer paralysis, but the mild stroke may have affected his speech and his memory. He’s been having home therapy since it happened.

That certainly begs the question of who issued the statement that Hayes was quitting "South Park" now because it mocked Scientology four months ago. If it wasn’t Hayes, then who would have done such a thing?

Meantime, Tom Cruise may have gotten Comedy Central to pull its repeat of "South Park"'s Scientology spoof last week, but the result is that episode is all over the Web. You can see it for free at youtube.com.

Not only that, the Comedy Central Web site has four clips from the 21-minute show. And it also says that “Trapped in the Closet” will air this Wednesday at 10 p.m.

So whether or not Cruise actually did use influence at Viacom/Paramount to get the show pulled from last week’s schedule, here it is, bigger and better than ever. Of course, no one would have cared one way or another if “Trapped” simply had aired on schedule.

Of course, no one could blame Cruise, John Travolta or even R&B singer R. Kelly for being upset about the episode. They are poked fun at mercilessly.

In the episode, Stan, one of the "South Park" characters, is solicited into Scientology. He gives them $240 and takes an EMeter test. This convinces the higher-ups that Stan is the reincarnation of the group’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard.

That would be bad enough, wouldn’t it? But Cruise visits Stan in his bedroom and winds up hiding in his closet when Stan tells him he’s not the greatest actor. Thus is born the line “Tom Cruise won’t come out of the closet.”

It’s repeated dozens of times. Travolta soon joins Cruise in Stan’s closet. He won’t come out, either. And when they do, there is the ecstatic announcement that they’ve “come out of the closet.”

It's kind of strange though. Why did Stone and Parker react the way he did if they didn't even know for sure that Hayes was quitting? Surely they must have contact with him? Did they jump the gun a bit?

They may have been suckered by the 'offical' statement like everyone else. That or perhaps Hayes had second thoughts and is looking for a way out. Lots of 'maybe's here.

Like I said before, maybe it was a publicity stunt. Why not? If Hayes was actually cool with the episode then maybe he agreed to do this as a publicity stunt. With the season premier this week, it just makes sense. They show got a LOT of free publicity because of this story.

I read an article on Yahoo saying that for the season premere they chopped and screwed Chefs voice from old episodes. WOuldn't seem that far out, I imagine they would have a lot to work with.

So much for it being a publicity stunt. Chef fell from a rope bridge, was incinerated, had a cougar tear his arm off, got shot, had a bear rip him in half, and then had the cougar rip the skin off of his face.

As one of the people who believes that all religion is a scam, I have a few things to say. First, the season premiere was brilliant. Second, the "Church" of Scientology does not deserve any respect from anyone, for any reason. It is a dangerous cult whose most benign crime is defrauding members and weaseling hundreds of thousands of dollars out of them. All the extortion in the world doesn't hold a candle to drawing in impressionable people then brainwashing, abusing, and even murdering them. To hurl shit at those responsible for this cult would be degrading to the name of human excrement and suffice only to waste perfectly good fertilizer.

Making fun of religion isn't new on South Park. They've always done it.

I agree with the people who think that Isaac Hayes is being a little overly sensitive.

It is a little hypocritical that he can stand the show making fun of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism,and all other religions, big and small, but Scientology is sacred.

NOTHING is sacred on South Park. That's the point. That's why people watch.

I have a very difficult time understanding how people can actually believe in scientology, even after it's founder claimed to have created it specifically to create a cult. Hayes, Cruise, Holmes, Kelley, Travolta........IMO they all have some mental imbalance that keeps them from recognizing reality. IMO, this is the huge hypocrisy of religion in general. Hayes left because HIS religion was being bashed, yet all religions, to some extent, believe their religion is the true one and their religious deity is the true deity.
