He took this shot from about 50 ft away....I can smell the ozone now.

Sgoilear 02-16-2006 03:31 AM

Yow. That's very nice. If I were that guy I think I'd be looking for a new pair of pants after taking that pic.

BigBen 02-16-2006 06:07 AM

repetez apres moi: "MERDE!"

Charlatan 02-16-2006 06:12 AM

What's that? I can't hear you.

JustJess 02-16-2006 06:40 AM

Yeah, who did he piss off??

absorbentishe 02-16-2006 10:00 AM

That is totally awesome. I bet he didn't feel his heart for about a minute or so afterward. I was in 2 places that were struck, and can tell you it is scary as hell, but I never saw the bolts. It's amazing he was able to actually get that photo.

stevie667 02-16-2006 10:27 AM

I don't even want to see the state of his roof...

astrahl 02-16-2006 10:29 AM

Lightening is one of the most spectacular nature hazards out there and this pic is one of the best I've seen.

Kudos to the slightly crispy photographer.

snowy 02-16-2006 11:03 AM

Wow, what a pic. Amazing.

clavus 02-16-2006 11:54 AM

I hope he had the mother of all surge protectors.

serlindsipity 02-16-2006 12:03 PM

after something like that, i'd need new pants and undies... and a big tissue to wipe the tears from laughing from the fact that Karma is REALLY pissed at me!

barenakedladies 02-16-2006 01:27 PM

simply amazing...

i love how something so destructive could be so beautiful at the same time

BigBen 02-16-2006 02:11 PM

I tell you guys the story of being stuck in an electrical storm sitting on 10 tonnes of ammunition?

LINKY

I saw lightning like that. I didn't like it.

Hey, thanks for bringing back my PTSD, Tecoyah!

Gabbyness 02-16-2006 02:12 PM

That picture is seriously amazing. I almost have a tough time believing it's legit - I mean, does lightning even last long enough to be captured by film?

Regardless - straight up wicked.

SirLance 02-16-2006 03:07 PM

Holy crap! I bet the thunderclap was deafening!

JumpinJesus 02-16-2006 06:07 PM

Great capture. As much as I would love to grab of shot of lightning like that, I'm also terrified of being unlucky enough to be that close to a strike.

msh58 02-16-2006 09:42 PM

amazing

sends michael j fox back to the future. just like that.

Zeraph 02-16-2006 09:50 PM

Sooooooooooooo cool. :) Wonder what the damage was like...sometimes lighting doesnt end up doing that much damage. Sometimes it blows things up, sometimes it starts things on fire.

TexanAvenger 02-16-2006 11:26 PM

I've been about two hundred feet from a strike and that was an awesome experience... I don't know that I can imagine quartering the distance and being ready enough to get it on film.

Franklin would be proud. And singed.

I've taken lots of lightning pictures, just not from that close. The article I read on this pisture says the guy plans to get serious about taking storm photos. To which I say "Have fun but you've already taken the picture of your career".

Johnny Pyro 02-19-2006 12:38 PM

That's awesome! One of my biggest fears is being struck by lighting. I would of definitely shat if I was taking that picture.

Wyckd 02-19-2006 01:35 PM

wow thats cool.. the quality aint that bad either.

CryptikSoul 02-19-2006 06:05 PM

SHAZAM!

Ah what am I thinking, no one's going to get the reference.:(

noodle 02-19-2006 06:34 PM

shazaam had a big bolt o'lightning on his chestie, is that the reference?

One of my friends was about 50 feet from a lightning strike when they were coming off of a 44' climbing tower. Knocked her coworker the fuggout. Once we all found out she was okay, we teased her unmercifully about Powder... she was 4 months pregnant.
(Kid's okay, though she should be about eight now and she was brilliant at 3 years old)

Pardon the pun, but brilliant shot!

Yeah, see his alter-ego is a kid named Billy, and whenever he wanted to transform into Captain Marvel, he'd yell out SHAZAM and a lightning bolt would hit him. Yup yup. :D

noodle 02-19-2006 06:53 PM

Yay! I feel smart! Forgot the Captain Marvel name, though.
We used to run around the neighborhood yelling "Shazaam!" and smacking each other on the head. That's where that came from! Beside the fact that we were violent little twits.

Oops! sorry for the threadjack, Tecoyah!

[Geek Mode ON]

You're thinking of Captain Marvel, the big red cheese. Billy Batson was a ten-year-old boy given the powers of

Solomon (wisdom)
Hercules (strength)
Atlas (stamina)
Zeus (power, magic lighting)
Achilles (courage, invulnerability)
Mercury (speed, flight).

Shazam was the ancient wizard who gave him the powers. By saying the wizard's name, he'd transform into Captain Marvel by being struck by magic lightning, wearing a bright red suit with a yellow lightning bolt on it.

He later shared the power with his cousin, Freddie Freeman, a disabled newsvendor, who changed by saying "Captain Marvel", which utilized the magic lighting to change him into Captain Marvel Jr. Jr. stayed a skinny teen, and wore a blue suit with a lightning bolt. He's the only non-mute superhero who can't say his own name, and currently a member of the outsiders.

Billy later discovered a sister he never knew, Mary, and shared the power with her, also. She got a dress version of the red suit, later changed to a white dress with gold trim, and powers from a group of goddesses instead of the same gods as Captain Marvel.

Billy was recently killed in a war between parallel earths in Infinite Crisis, leaving the SHAZAM power and Captain Marvel without a human host. He's going to be replaced, but nobody knows by whom at this point.

There's also Uncle Marvel, a con man with no powers, and the luitenant Marvels, Fat Marvel, Tall Marvel, Skinny Marvel, all with now powers either, and Hoppy the Marvel bunny. He's a bunny in the red suit with the SHAZAM powers.

--------

The picture is truly awesome.

Dragonknight 02-19-2006 10:22 PM

To the point, that is the coolest freaken pict I've seen. I only wish I could see something like that. Without gettin zapped of course.

LazyBoy 02-19-2006 10:37 PM

$$J$G$$ 02-20-2006 04:46 AM

I bet the person taking that pic didnt stick around long after that shocking experience.

maleficent 02-20-2006 04:49 AM

I hope he went and bought a powerball ticket- they claim the odds of winning are like getting struck by lightening.... twice... he's halfway there ...

cyrnel 02-20-2006 05:17 AM

Thought this might be interesting:

"Lightning injuries are varied and take many different forms. The most dangerous (and possibly fatal) immediate complications are cardiovascular and neurologic. It must be kept in mind that only immediate and effective cardiorespiratory resuscitation (started by rescuers), followed as soon as possible by emergency medical treatment, can save victims who are in cardiopulmonary arrest, or avert the serious consequences of cerebral hypoxia. Some victims remain in a coma despite intensive resuscitation and die of secondary causes including hemorrhages and multiple lesions (encephalic, cardiac, pulmonary, intra-abdominal)."
Nothing there about "soiled shorts," but it's probably included with PTSD.

Isn't it likely he had cameras set with sensors triggering the shutter to close? Standing around waiting seems like a low probability gamble.

Looks like his neighbour probably got killed by that one, or at least shit himself hard while wondering why theres now a massive hole in his roof!

newtx 03-09-2006 10:38 PM

Outstanding photo. Wonder how the photographer had the presence of mind to get the shot. I would have been ducking for cover.
Reminds me that I need to use my camera Much More.
