Great capture. As much as I would love to grab of shot of lightning like that, I'm also terrified of being unlucky enough to be that close to a strike.

I've taken lots of lightning pictures, just not from that close. The article I read on this pisture says the guy plans to get serious about taking storm photos. To which I say "Have fun but you've already taken the picture of your career".

shazaam had a big bolt o'lightning on his chestie, is that the reference?

One of my friends was about 50 feet from a lightning strike when they were coming off of a 44' climbing tower. Knocked her coworker the fuggout. Once we all found out she was okay, we teased her unmercifully about Powder... she was 4 months pregnant.
(Kid's okay, though she should be about eight now and she was brilliant at 3 years old)

Pardon the pun, but brilliant shot!

Yeah, see his alter-ego is a kid named Billy, and whenever he wanted to transform into Captain Marvel, he'd yell out SHAZAM and a lightning bolt would hit him. Yup yup.

Yay! I feel smart! Forgot the Captain Marvel name, though.
We used to run around the neighborhood yelling "Shazaam!" and smacking each other on the head. That's where that came from! Beside the fact that we were violent little twits.

Oops! sorry for the threadjack, Tecoyah!

[Geek Mode ON]

You're thinking of Captain Marvel, the big red cheese. Billy Batson was a ten-year-old boy given the powers of

Solomon (wisdom)
Hercules (strength)
Atlas (stamina)
Zeus (power, magic lighting)
Achilles (courage, invulnerability)
Mercury (speed, flight).

Shazam was the ancient wizard who gave him the powers. By saying the wizard's name, he'd transform into Captain Marvel by being struck by magic lightning, wearing a bright red suit with a yellow lightning bolt on it.

He later shared the power with his cousin, Freddie Freeman, a disabled newsvendor, who changed by saying "Captain Marvel", which utilized the magic lighting to change him into Captain Marvel Jr. Jr. stayed a skinny teen, and wore a blue suit with a lightning bolt. He's the only non-mute superhero who can't say his own name, and currently a member of the outsiders.

Billy later discovered a sister he never knew, Mary, and shared the power with her, also. She got a dress version of the red suit, later changed to a white dress with gold trim, and powers from a group of goddesses instead of the same gods as Captain Marvel.

Billy was recently killed in a war between parallel earths in Infinite Crisis, leaving the SHAZAM power and Captain Marvel without a human host. He's going to be replaced, but nobody knows by whom at this point.

There's also Uncle Marvel, a con man with no powers, and the luitenant Marvels, Fat Marvel, Tall Marvel, Skinny Marvel, all with now powers either, and Hoppy the Marvel bunny. He's a bunny in the red suit with the SHAZAM powers.

--------

The picture is truly awesome.

Most Typical Disorders Associated with Lightning Strikes

(from "Lightning Injuries to Humans in France" by Dr. Elisabeth Gourbière of the Electricité de France, Service des Etudes Médicales)

Lightning deaths (~20%)
-Asystole/Ventricular fibrillation
-Inhibition of brainstem respiratory centers
-Multi-system failure (delayed death)

Cardio-pulmonary injuries
-Arrhythmias - Arterial pressure changes
-Electrocardiographic changes
-Myocardial damages (infarction)
-Cardiac dysfunction
-Pulmonary edema - Respiratory distress syndrome

Neurologic/psychiatric injuries
-Loss of consciousness/coma
-Amnesia/Anxiety/Confusion/Aphasia/Seizures
-Electroencephalographic abnormalities
-Brain/Cerebellum damages
-Numbness/Weakness in limbs/Partial or complete (but temporary) paralysis
-Neuropathy/Pain syndromes
-Spinal cord injury/Parkinsonism
-Sleep and memory disorders/Concentration
disturbances/Irritability/Depression/Various other disturbances such as headaches, tiring easily, lightning storm phobia, etc.
-Post traumatic Stress Disorder

Burns and Cutaneous marking
-Small, deep entry/exit points (typical)
-Contact, metal chain heating (typical)
-Superficial linear
-Flash
-Lichtenberg figures (arborescent, fern-like markings)athognomonic(on trunk, arms, shoulders)

Clothing, shoes
-Exploded off, torn off, shredded, singed…

Blunt traumas (explosion)
-Contusion, internal hemorrhage (brain, lungs, liver, intestine…)
-(rarely) Fractures (skull, cervical spinal column, extremities…)

Auditory and ocular injuries
-Tympanic membrane ruptured (typical)
-Deafness/Tinnitus/Vertigo
-Transient blindness/Photophobia-Conjunctivitis - Corneal damage
-Retinal abnormalities (macular hole) - optic neuritis
-Cataract

"Lightning injuries are varied and take many different forms. The most dangerous (and possibly fatal) immediate complications are cardiovascular and neurologic. It must be kept in mind that only immediate and effective cardiorespiratory resuscitation (started by rescuers), followed as soon as possible by emergency medical treatment, can save victims who are in cardiopulmonary arrest, or avert the serious consequences of cerebral hypoxia. Some victims remain in a coma despite intensive resuscitation and die of secondary causes including hemorrhages and multiple lesions (encephalic, cardiac, pulmonary, intra-abdominal)."
Nothing there about "soiled shorts," but it's probably included with PTSD.

Isn't it likely he had cameras set with sensors triggering the shutter to close? Standing around waiting seems like a low probability gamble.
