a prejudiced site that surprised me
I have many friends whose ancestry is from the south asian sub continent. I find them all to be very nice, intelligent, funny people and i wouldn't ever think anything bad about them. one of my friends told me to go to www.ratedesi.com and check out some of the preyty gals on the site. I visited and happened to stumble on the forums. i was freaking shocked. the forums contained some of the most ignorant, racist, anti-semetic, anti-black, anti-white, anti-east asian comments (you name it) that i've ever read. you would think you were reading a supremecy website. not to say that there weren't sensible, respectable posters, but the majority of ignorance was just flat out rediculous.
i wondered if a lot of groups, when gathered in large numbers, are as hateful. i went to a few east asian sites, and honestly the comments there were timid compared to the ones on the site mentioned above. i went to a jewish website that is mostly a teen forum and the kids there (most the people on rate desi seem to be of the 18-30 age group) and theywere much more mature and respectful to other faiths and cultures than they were. what are your opinions on that site? have you ever been in a large group of people of similar backgrounds who were very biased against other groups? P.S. I am not flaming on Desis. in fact, i think they're very good people. i was just very shocked at what i read on that site. |

First of all, what is a desi?
Secondly, you need to relax. The hit counter shows that plenty of people have read this post. If no one has anything to say then so be it. You don't have to panic, it's not the end of the world. I can't tell you how many times I've posted a dud thread... |

A majority of people have NO IDEA what Desi is. MTV just launched MTV Desi and while I'm well versed in SE Asian Culture, I've never heard the term Desi up until that time. Hateful people are just that... hateful.

Hot!
Anyways... where's the discussion? I don't think it shocks too many people to read racist comments on the internet. If there ever was a place to say anything and everything, it's the internet, right? And just 'cause people are totally hot and self-absorbed doesn't mean they don't hate entire subsections of humanity. And hey, it's not like there aren't some TFPers who don't share the same opinions as they.

I have not heard of the term Desi so before I could comment I had to research this first. Here's what I came up with and perhaps it will benefit others coming to this thread as well.
"Desi (...alternatively spelled Deshi), is a term used by South Asians to refer to themselves (in a manner that avoids any allusion to the specific state of origin and pointing to a common broader identity). This is also a subculture found amongst the South Asian diaspora. South Asia refers to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives, but the diaspora spreads from Fiji to Trinidad, from Kenya to the Persian Gulf, from South Africa to Guyana, from Southall in Britain to Queens, New York, and many places in between. The term comes from a Sanskrit word ... "Desh" ("nation" or "the motherland"), borrowed by most South Asian languages. It means "countryman" and it is used even amongst people who may have roots in a different country from them. Amongst people from the Indian subcontinent, especially in English-speaking First World countries, this term refers to the blend of cultures and identity of the South Asian communities, crossing national and cultural boundaries that separated them in their ancestral countries. Moreover, many of their ancestors left the Subcontinent before its partition or some of them have mixed Desi background and consequently don't relate to a single native country. South Asians living outside South Asia now refer to anything or anyone related to their countries or culture as Desi or Deshi" Wikipedia There is quite a bit more interesting information but this is the core of it that relates to the subject at hand. As far as I've seen it seems like people are much more willing to voice their negative feelings with regards to any race, culture, or religion when they are able to voice it within the anonymity of the internet. I, myself have been tempted to voice negative opinions even to particular people in chat who have been of a different race or culture that is at the moment clashing with me. I am not normally a vocally racist person and in general am not very racist. I think the internet gives us a freedom to behave in a way other than our ego would normally allow our ID to behave. Granted in large groups people tend to form a mob mentality and follow the leaders in the crowd more easily. I don't think this seems to occur as much as in past times because of the level of law enforcement in force at this time.

As someone else said, I'm not really shocked by racism anymore. It's rampant on the internet. I mean, it does make me angry, but I'm not going to go around looking for it so I can yell at people, becuase it doesn't really do any good. They're not going to change their beliefs because of someone who yelled at them on the internet.
Anyhow, about the site you posted. I didn't look thoroughly, but I couldn't find anything that racist. I went straight to this thread: Is it wrong for a Desi girl to.... It's about dating outside the culture, so I thought it would be a good candidate to find what you were talking about, and while some were vehemently against dating outside the culture, most people were open for rational discussion. If that's the type of thing you're talking about...well, some people feel strongly about intermarrying. Doesn't neccesarily mean they hate other cultures. Just...don't want their children to marry them (mostly out of concerns for preserving the culture and values of the religion). Um...but if you can link us to an actual thread that shows us what you were talking about, you'd probably get more responses *edited* For a reallly dumb typo |

Just in case you weren't aware of this, already, here's a handy formula for you to remember:
anonymity + audience = asshole The greater the audience, the greater the asshole. The greater the anonymity, the greater the asshole. It's just a fact of life... |

hey i'm sorry for not responding sooner. the reason i don't wanna post direct links because im trying to be as subjective as possible, not necessarily trying to point out only the bad. and yes i agree that the internet usualy allows hate to flourish.
i'm not saying that every asect of that site is bad. in fact the complete opposite. i guess i just didn't expect to read some of the things that i had read. |

If you want to find more "prejudice sites that surprise you" search for "message board" in google.
Really, often when people of a single background join together to talk anonymously they say stupid discriminatory stuff whether they're Desi, Catholic, gamer experts, or anything. The best way to avoid sites like that would be to only go to well moderated and multicultural message boards. Like this one. |
