There's no mention of his age, but I can't imagine he was very old at all. It's impressive that he even remembered the event for so long, let alone is still wracked by guilt because of it...

I should image that, if that's all that has been bothering him for all of these years, he has led an otherwise virtuous life. Good for him.

That's a long time to have a guilty conscience, maybe he's trying to clear it before his inevitable death?

Ben: "Hey, listen here, you old fuck. I have committed greater sins this morning on my way to work. You lit a firecracker 80 years ago? Where the fuck were you in WWII?"

or even better: "Dude, you owe me 4,000 euros. The fine was half a deutchmark, but inflation is a bitch, you see..."

They could have played it up and said something like, "We've been trying to crack this case for ages. We didn't think we'd ever solve it. You're in deep doo-doo now, Mister."
