The Onion anyone?
Anyone else here check in on "The Onion" from time to time? Sometimes I find their stuff laugh out loud funny, yet other time it's like they try to hard. They've recently been raking VP Biden over the coals, NYT had a recent article about their Biden jokes, article here.
I checked in today and found this- Quote:
So anyone else here like The Onion? Or maybe hate it? |
No. I don't like it. (don't don't like it?) I don't care for it.
I have never visited the website proper, and I've maybe only stayed on a page that was Onion-related three times, at most, and always less than a minute. It's a premise to the site that I interpret as dry, trying-too-hard, nonsensical sarcasm parody. I only like two of the above types of humour, but having them combined is horrible. The internet's version of The Daily Show / Colbert Report leaves me feeling and thinking, 'what else is on?', always. (I don't respect Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert's alter-ego, and I barely can tolerate Steve Carell.) |
It's pretty obvious that I love and attempt to emulate The Onion as much as possible.
If The Onion was college-aged female, I would want her as my weekend fuckbuddy. |
I like The Onion because it's a confirmation I can always rely on: Yes. Yes, the world has gone insane.
They just go with it. I still remember the first article of theirs I read that really won me over. It was this one here: Consumer-Product Diversity Now Exceeds Biodiversity | The Onion - America's Finest News Source |
C'mon, they have a 'frige magnet that says:
"Kitten thinks of nothing but murder all day." |
It's funny because it's true.

I used to read the Onion regularly. Then for a while if you went to the website you had to sit through some bedamned commercial before you could access the content. Broke me of the habit, and now I don't even have it as a bookmark.
That said, I remember the headline after 9/11 - the first response I ever encountered of those events that wasn't either kneejerk or pedantic. They are not afraid of anything, and they are oh-so-often dead on when it comes to skewering what needs to be skewered. My one son shares links to Onion articles with me on Facebook from time to time, which keeps me checking in with them. Priceless. Yeah, I love The Onion. I've been reading it for over a decade. And actually I think the Onion's sister paper, The AV Club, is the best pop media website out there. I'm a total fanboy, basically. I think my #1 all-time favorite Onion headline was from right after Gene Siskel died: "Ebert Victorious." |
