I found this cool web app that lets you drop in a phrase and it will automagically translate back and forth between English and foreign languages up to 56 times. What will happen is it will spit out what's left over after things get lost in translation.

Sometimes you get hilarious results. Post yours here. Be sure to include the original phrase and the number of times it was translated.


I started with the first line from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

I translated it 56 times to get:

There will be 22, but I am happy all the time.

Um, what? :confused:

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move."

...20 translations later we get:

"Start a creative space. Many people find it very angry and very well in important changes."

Tilted Forum Project: The Evolution of Humanity, Sexuality, and Philosophy

translated 50 times:

Forum for the exchange of the project: Philosophy and Urban Development in Indonesia

This is fun.

Being uncreative, I also went with classic literature. From Richard III:

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by the Duke of York;
And all the clouds that lower'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

Which after 56 translations gives us:

"Confusion, the crew of York in the winter summer, the kind and lover'd."

I like it. It's succinct.

"excuses are the tools of incompetence that build monuments of nothing."

...40 translations later we get:

"The reason for the building."

"Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred."

After 40 translations becomes:

"The European Union and the valley of death, while the other half of the Union, said: 06:30"

"Put that coffee down! Coffee's for closers only. Do you think I'm fucking with you? I am not fucking with you. I'm here from downtown. I'm here from Mitch and Murray. And I'm here on a mission of mercy."

...40 translations later we get:

"Think about the coffee! Café will be closed. I do not think, you know? This is not funny. I was home. Lee, Mickey died. This will work."

In honor of Veteran's Day, the Armistice of Nov. 11, 1918: "The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month."

Twenty translations later: "It was the end of the century, atheist atheists ten months."

Blaw haw. I love these things.

First I put in this: "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

And got this: "How many of you May woodchuck woodchuck woodchuck wood if you can eat?"

Then I remembered how the phrase actually goes: "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

"Would" instead of "could," and I get this mess:

"It can be like pulling the core woodchuck wood a woodchuck?"

ONE LETTER CHANGED THE WHOLE WORLD.
