Scariest Movies of all time

There is a list of them, with commentary, at the Boston Globe website. Pretty interesting. Also interesting how they define "scary." But anyway, click here and enjoy.

Heh, so many of the pictures they used were Charlatans avatar at some point in time...

Ametyville Horror is my favorite horror flick of all time.

The remake made me very sad, though...

Righteous! I actually concur with #1. My favorite!

...

The Ring definitely deserved it's position. It has one of the best "OH SHIT!" scenes ever when the little kid goes "You shouldn't have helped her..." near the end. That and when the ghoul girl crawled out of the TeeVee, my girlfriend at the time screamed like a banshee. Another horror masterpiece.

Very awesome. I'm definitely going to be doing a horror-fest marathon now. Possibly with friends. Possibly pranking them later with elements from the flicks.

Punk.of.Ages 04-30-2010 04:22 PM

I was pretty happy with #1, as well...

Definitely a good horror flick.

My new favorite has to be "30 Days of Night", this was scary.

30 Days of Night (2007)

I concur. 30 Days of Night is a winner. The isolated feeling, the desperate battles... definitely gritty.

I wasn't a big fan of the ending, though... some described it as Dragonball Z rapes Blade 3.

There are a few movies I disagree with on that list, but for the most part it was pretty great, including #1. And now I have a new stack of movies to watch!

Plan9 04-30-2010 07:59 PM

Best part about most of these flicks is that you can get them for ~$5 on Amazon.com. I just bought 10 DVDs for a little over $5 a piece, shipped. Gnarly!

Top 10 Vampire Movies, I didnt care for Twilight, Queen of the Damned was excellent + killer soundtrack, some good still frames & tunes.

I must be miss the gene that makes movies scary to me...Several of the movies on the list were really good....but scary? The closest one on the list for me would be jaws, because I saw it in the theater when I was eight.

I think it depends on how you perceive "scary." I agree, I am not scared by any of the movies on the list, but they elicit specific emotions that other moves are less likely to cause. Am I scared watching The Thing? No. But am I bored? Does it give me the same feelings as watching an action movie? Also no. So, scary is the best way to describe such movies, even if I'm not hiding behind the couch.

good list! REC was really a good one on the list. The Ring was a nice creepy movie.

Plan9 05-01-2010 08:26 AM

Well, scary means different things to different people. I'm not scared by horror movies, I just find them really fascinating. A good "scary movie" is one that keeps you guessing, uses a variety of different elements to deliver the oh-yeah-that's-awesome.

DaveOrion 05-01-2010 08:48 AM

When I saw The Exorcist in a theater about '74 I was actually scared, so was my older sister who ran screaming from the horror.

As an adult nothing really scares me cept clowns. The Hills Have Eyes was another "scary" one that really stuck with me.

dippin 05-01-2010 08:48 AM

Wow, blair witch 2 in there? the guy who wrote this must be related to the director or something.

DaveOrion 05-01-2010 10:05 AM

Yea, the blair witch 1 & 2 werent too hot, Nosferatu was included in the top 10 vampire movies, didnt care for it, classic or not.

Thinking about this thread, I remembered the movie that scared me the most as an adult:

They

That movie enthralled me and made me jump multiple times throughout.

Loved this List! But I honetsly think that "Alien" in 1979 was waaaay more scary than "The Thing." The Thing was well done, granted...but c'mon, Alien was far more intense IMHO. So very Gieger graphic, 'eh? (Brain Salad Surgery anyone?)

When we saw "Alien" in the theater on first run, my hubby flew up outta his seat when that disgusting critter blast outta that guys stomach! Me and the other two friends with us screamed our heads off (& then laughed our butts off later.) The whole theater screamed and this was in Dallas Texas.

But damn it was INTENSE from the first 10 minutes to the very end and then....oh no, you knew they weren't finished!

More to come in the sequels!

Bacchanal 05-05-2010 01:10 PM

Finally, a good list. I think there are only like 10 movies on there I haven't seen.

I love The Thing! It still has parts in it that make me jump...

Kind of surprised to see Audition on there. I wouldn't call it "scary" necessarily, but the last ~20 minutes are definitely intense, and absolutely fit in a horror movie.

Gina_ 05-05-2010 01:52 PM

That was a good list and I agree with #1. I remember being freaked out after watching it at the movies. I would have put Alien at #2 for the same reason and moved The Shining up as well.

That said, I still have never seen The Exorcist from beginning to end. I read the book as a teen so watching it always brought back how scared I was when it was only text. Films about possession and invisible threats really get to me.
