I totally had an action figure The Creeper when I was younger. I never knew his name though, but it was among one of the best articulated figures I had. For some reason, though, I thought he could transform into a werewolf-like-creature, but on his wiki page, it makes no mention of that as one of his abilities.

Power Girl looks a little top heavy in that last image. I'd be surprise if she could even get off the ground. My superhero crush was always Storm... with a mohawk.

I'll now be introducing this "theme within the theme", and it will heretofore be known as "Superhero Camp".
(If you don't know what 'Camp' means, it's a British term of light insultation. Basically, coalesce definitions #1, 3, 4 & 5 to understand its premise.)

"Camp Superman"

George Reeves, Superman, 1950s...
"During a break, Reeves shakes hands with Mister McTavish, robot!"

Not for nothing, Charlie, and I don't mean to insult you in any way, because I do appreciate having at least one contributor/commentator on this topic, (though I am waiting/hoping for more to join in, perhaps foolishly) but do you think you could try to at least find the respective authors to the works, illustrations, photographs that you are posting?

I mean, it's not hard to find, as, for instance, I uncovered the creator to the above canvas painting's in less than ten seconds, and I do find it fortuitous, if not altogether serendipitous, to be able to have the opportunity to give nearly every artist within my threads their due recognition. But, I really can't do it alone (even though up until this point I have, but it is exhausting "tidying" up after others after a while). If you need any pointers or hints about how to actually find all the relevant details, or just the right "in this direction" credits, I'd be happy to help. Ecstatic, really.

Anyway, besides that little nudging diatribe, here is...

The Importance of Superman’s Cape

Quote:
My 2 1/2 year-old kid is obsessed with Superman. He’s walking around humming the theme song, going “Ta-ta-ta!” every time he removes his pajamas and changes to day clothes, and is running around yelling “I am Superman!” all day long. My wife, supporting his obsession, had sewn him a red cape (which I am SO envious of) and every day, after the ceremonious brushing of the teeth (“Just like Superman does..”) my son puts on the cape and “flies” to daycare.

One might think that it would be embarrassing, hanging around with a boy dressed as the man of steel, day in and day out, but surprisingly, it is not. People are smiling when he’s breezing by them, some are even lifting their hands in the air, imitating flight.

Two days ago, bringing Superboy to daycare, we were approached by one of his playmates, another 2 1/2 year old. That boy – let’s call him Clark for the sake of this story – is part of a family that’s having a very hard time dealing with a chronic sickness afflicting one of its kids. That takes a toll on the parents and certainly affects the amount of time they can spend with Clark (they are doing an amazing job, and we wish them all the best).

And so, that morning Clark approached Superboy and myself, and asked about the cape and superman. He was curious as to that piece of red cloth that my son wears to daycare, and clearly was very much enchanted by it. After consulting with his parents my wife had asked their permission to sow two more capes, one for Clark and the other for his brother. This morning, the capes have landed in the kids’ laps. 3 seconds later there were two Supermen running/flying around the yard, going “Ta ta ta!”, with glittering eyes and VERY wide smiles.

It made me wonder. What is it in that red cape that makes one’s heart leap? What is it in the redness of the color that blows such wind into one’s sails and lifts the spirit? Batman’s cape doesn’t have the same effect, nor does Thor’s. I don’t know the answer to that question. I do know that Superman’s cape is of no practical use in the Superman stories. I do know that capes are a hindrance to superheros – getting caught in propellers while flying, they are hard to conceal, etc. But after seeing the glitter in Clark’s eyes, and knowing that my son is willing to settle on the cape alone, not insisting on boots, over-the-tights underwear etc., I know that the cape is important. Hopefully, it will make Clark’s and his family’s life easier and bring them a little hope and joy as it does my son.

And just so you feel a little of that joy, hope, and elevation of the spirit, here’s the closest the movies bring us to having that feeling without actually wearing a cape.

*tidbit of trivia: the character Harley Quinn was originally created
and conceptualized by Paul Dini & Bruce Timm, and she made her
first appearance back in 1992, on Batman: The Animated Series.

Garth Ennis, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti's 'The Pro' Animation

Prostitution has been explored pretty thoroughly in Hollywood, but I'm not sure anything's approached the superpowered depravity of an animated version of "The Pro." Based on Garth Ennis, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti and Paul Mounts' 2002 one-shot from Image Comics, the animated trailer serves as something of a summary of the hooker heroine's adventures in a world of superhero parody.

There's been talk of a live action version of "The Pro" before (with creators calling for actresses such as Sarah Silverman and Ellen Muth for the leading role) along with a supposed movie "demo," but this past week's post by Palmiotti on YouTube marks the first time this particular animation's been made widely viewable.

Watch the animated short film HERE.

fanservice! Wednesday continues with a new, sleek feature of Character Captures; this week: Zatanna.

Zatanna Zatara is a DC(comics) Universe stage-magician/superhero whose magical abilities derive from speaking backwards. She is the daughter of magician John Zatara, who passed these abilities down to her daughter.

Zatanna is a long time friend of Batman, who she met as a child. In later years, their relationship would lead to her joining the Justice League during the Satellite Era. It was in these years the infamous mind-wipe of Batman and Dr.Light took place (as seen in Identity Crisis). However, Batman and Zatanna would reconcile from these events and grow closer once more.

Currently, Zatanna is fighting evil magical underworld types in the streets of San Francisco in the pages of her solo series.
