Quote:

When I was a kid, I drew cartoons all the time. I drew cows and alligators and pigs and superheroes. I drew a platypus named Ed. I drew a dead dog named Dead Dog Bob. I drew everything I saw and everything I wanted to see.

Many years passed. By a strange series of coincidences, I found myself working in an office. The more I used a keyboard, the worse my penmanship became. The constant hum of computers made my brain twitch. That’s when I stopped drawing cartoons.

Then the chickens came.

Like some sort of haunting supernatural force, the chickens bubbled up from the ol’ subconscious mind. In a trance-like state, I drew them on office whiteboards. I drew them in notebooks. I drew them on anything that sat still long enough. People started asking, “Who’s drawing those damn chicken cartoons everywhere?”

The chickens were unstoppable. To retain my sanity, all I could do was grab a stack of sticky notes, and release the Savage Chickens.

Well, let’s see. There’s three of us last time we all sat down for a headcount (best 10 minute meeting ever by the way). There’s me Ray, then there’s Will and Raf. Two of us are related, but Will is taller than Raf who spent five dollars more than me on ice-cream. You do the math. If you see us at a party, we’re the three dudes in the back arguing about whether or not a light saber could stop an oncoming Mario fireball (in case you were wondering, oh yeah, it can), or if the lung capacity of a cheetah is greater than that of a house cat (we really have no idea).

Hello. This is Raf. I’d like to be frank for a moment if I may. Okay, I’m done. I’d like to be Raf again. I’ll begin at the beginning. The idea of starting a web comic came to us during dinner. We wanted to venture into something new and exciting, so we deliberated and narrowed it down to two viable options: option A was starting a web-comic; option B was becoming superheros. When it was made clear to us that the ability to consume large quantities of food in a short period of time was NOT a superpower, we went with option A.

Anyway, the comic is simply a commentary on the love life of sandwiches.

YouTube - Axe Cop Episode ONE

Axe Cop: The Comic Written by a 5-Year-Old, Drawn by a 29-Year-Old

Here is the actual strip from which the narrative stems: (note, the strips are very big in filesize)

Axe Cop #1   click to show

and here is the daily (weekly) workshop the family tandem goes through in creating the comic strip:

The writing process is basically just me quizzing Malachai as he develops the saga. I'll just try to pry all the details out of him and write them all down until something like a complete little story has been formed. Everything in AXE COP started in Malachai's head, all I do is sort it out and draw it. Here is a video of the writing process. So enjoy these comics, they are a fun slice of the mind of a 5 year old boy processed through the pen of a 30 year old comic artist.

along with Episode TWO

Axe Cop #2   click to show

Quote:

The AXE COP saga began on a Christmas visit to see my family. My Father, a man with very healthy loins, has managed to produce a variety of children, ranging from me, a 29 year old comic book artist, to my 5 year old brother Malachai, a 5 year old boy genius, with four other siblings in between. During the visit Malchai was running around with his toy fireman axe and he said he was playing "Axe Cop." He asked me to play with him, and I asked what my weapon was... so he brought me a toy flute (actually a recorder). I told him I would rather be Axe Cop then Flute Cop, and he seemed just fine with being Flute Cop. The story that followed became more and more brilliant, until I couldn't contain myself and I had to draw the whole thing into a one page comic. From there the saga continued, and over the course of my week-long visit we cranked out the first four episodes of AXE COP. I posted the comics to my blog and on Facebook and they got great responses. I decided to give AXE COP a home on the internet here and attempt to continue the saga as often as I have time to draw them, and I can get Malachai to write them.

Please send us your comments and questions, but keep in mind a child is present, so watch your frickin' language.

Wilson by Daniel Clowes: May 2010.

Quote:

Meet Wilson, an opinionated middle-aged loner who loves his dog and quite possibly no one else. In an ongoing quest to find human connection, he badgers friend and stranger alike into a series of one-sided conversations, punctuating his own lofty discursions with a brutally honest, self-negating sense of humor. After his father dies, Wilson, now irrevocably alone, sets out to find his ex-wife with the hope of rekindling their long-dead relationship, and discovers he has a teenage daughter, born after the marriage ended and given up for adoption. Wilson eventually forces all three to reconnect as a family - a doomed mission that will surely, inevitably backfire.

Boxer Hockey is a sport played by lunatics with frogs and with whatever instrument/bat each individual player wants to use. Brooms, sticks, salami… I’m guessing just about whatever your preferences is. The frog is the ball. Yes, it is. And you lose points for dead frogs. Sweet Jesus, I think I would play this game. Starring the team of Chuck, Skip and Rittz (and Billy (and their coach who may or may not be Tom Selleck)) Boxer Hockey is the creation of Tyson Hesse, and it is an outrageously comedic story wherein the team competes in a Boxer Hockey tournament as they travel around the world.

The above comic was illustrated by Alex, on a Thursday.

Quote:

Buttersafe is updated with a new comic every Tuesday and Thursday. These comics will have pictures and probably some words. Nothing else is guaranteed.

—–

Each comic is lovingly handcrafted by one of these two men:

Raynato Castro (usually Tuesdays): Ray’s lifelong goal is to some day master the one-inch punch. He can perform the two-inch punch. However, the density of air and the distance of the earth from the sun limits its effectiveness in most practical cases (e.g. demolishing buildings, defeating claw-fisted drug lords, knocking on really big doors, aiding choking babies).

In the meantime, Ray spends his days at the foot of a waterfall, training.

Alex Culang (usually Thursdays): Alex is a rusty button.

—–

Arthur Culang takes care of almost all of the business and technology issues and generally keeps Buttersafe from imploding, exploding, or sidesploding.

Quote:

Katharine Chandler Tiedrich XIV was born to wealthy Russian aristocrats in 1823, where she was trained in swordsmanship, honor, and how to play the accordion. Not long after, however, her family's prized diamond mine collapsed and plunged into bankruptcy. Stricken by poverty and in fear of being sold to the circus, Katie ran away from home at age nine and joined a ragtag crew of bloodthirsty pirates.

During the next twenty years, Katie circumnavigated the Earth and discovered Atlantis, which she sunk out of contempt. She also discovered Australia, but left almost immediately because the whole continent sucked and boomerangs are no good for plunder. While on her travels, she founded the city of Rome and carved Switzerland out of a meteorite, depositing it between Italy and France, just to keep an eye on them.

This one time, off the coast of Iceland, while fighting a kraken one-on-one with nothing but a steak knife to defend herself, Katie accidentally opened a rift in time and space when casting Firaga. She was flung thousands of years into the future (300,000 A.D., to be exact), when horrible insect mutants ruled the Earth. Calling themselves the Uurek'han, these titans had blocked out the sun with an organic smog, reterraforming the planet to their dank preference. Here Katie started an underground resistance movement, populated by the last remaining humans and a couple of dogs, who could talk by then. They fought in harsh conditions against impossible odds for years, and in one struggle Katie lost her right hand to a giant robotic praying mantis. It was okay though, because she is lefthanded anyway.

Many centuries and brutal clashes later, the small armada finally defeated the Uurek'han, destroying their smog machines and sending them back into the deepest reaches of space from whence they came. Katie lived in the future for a few more months, supervising the reconstruction of society and making sure France was never rebuilt. Her duty completed, Katie returned to the present by punching the ground so hard the shockwaves made the Earth's core spin backwards at over nine thousand RPM.

Reunited with her crew, Katie continued her original quest of piracy. After stealing everything of worth in Europe and western Africa, she hung up her silly pirate hat for a brief hiatus and trained under a waterfall or in a Denny's parking lot (this part is kind of fuzzy), then joined a clan of Arabian stragglers in the harsh deserts of Scotland. Here she slayed countless dragons who happened to be terrorizing the land.

Satisfied with her work, Katie returned to her home in the center of the Earth, where she has lived to this day. She now draws crappy comics by day and fights the Justice League by night.

For the first several years, the comic consisted of four square panels of dialogue in a two-by-two grid, with a punchline (often a non sequitur, pun, or pop culture reference) in the final panel. In 2005 Stevens abandoned this traditional form and began consistently publishing strips with more panels in slightly more varied configurations. Single panels of the strip are occasionally animated. The comic depicts a world where robots exist alongside humans, with human-robot romantic and sexual relationships commonplace. Although there is some character development and the occasional story arc, most strips are largely self-contained. Recurring themes include annual Halloween strips, featuring characters from the comic in costume. Diesel Sweeties is part of the Dumbrella community of web comics.

I spell my name with an exclamation point, like so: David Malki !

It’s considered an honorific, and used in the same manner as “Jr.” or “PhD”: there’s a single space before it. The exclamation point is not pronounced — though many have tried, often with hilarious results.

I’m currently the Supreme Commander of Publicity & Promotions for TopatoCo, the world’s most interesting artist-direct merchandise website. In the past, I’ve been a professional movie trailer editor, a volunteer search & rescue pilot, a freelance firearm specialist for film & television, and a picture-framer. Sometimes all at the same time.

In 2009, I began turning down all other work to focus on Wondermark and TopatoCo, and currently I’m one of the small (but growing!) number of individuals supported entirely by the exciting medium of Comics on the Internet™. My income comes mainly from book and apparel sales, as well as (in much smaller measures) private commissions and the sale of advertising on this site.

Wondermark is created from 19th-Century woodcuts and engravings, scanned from my personal collection of old books and also from volumes in the Los Angeles Central Library. Most of the books are bound volumes of general-interest magazines such as Harper’s, Frank Leslie’s and Punch, but my collection also includes special-interest magazines such as Scientific American, Sears-Roebuck catalogs, storybooks, and primers.

Wondermark began in April 2003. It’s been in several papers over the years (most notably in the print edition of The Onion from 2006-2009) but these days is found mostly online or in collections from Dark Horse Books.

In addition to creating comics, I also write on the subject of beards, the comic strip medium, advertising, media literacy and business. I live in Los Angeles with my wife Nikki, and I love kittens.

You can feel free to re-post any comics from this site on your blog, Facebook, LiveJournal, etc. without asking permission, so long as you include a link back to wondermark.com as well!
