facebook woes

If you don't know, as of today, Facebook will automatically index all your info on Google, which allows everyone to view it. To change this option, go to Settings --> Privacy Settings --> Search --> then UN-CLICK the box that says 'Allow indexing'. Facebook kept this one quiet.

It should be said, only the things you choose to post publicly are being indexed. Not that I don't think it's worth turning off, but let's not act like this is some nefarious ploy by Facebook to expose your secrets to Google.

It should also be noted that mine was already off by default, probably because I already went through my privacy settings long ago and everything I can possibly hide from the general public on Facebook has already been hidden.

see, people act like this is a big deal but 99.9% of websites are public domain anyways. For example if I write a public blog on myspace, or any other forum, journal, or blog, it is automatically indexed and searchable and I have no option to opt out of indexing. However, on facebook, I do. Not that it matters because if you've got half a goddamn clue ... See Moreabout the internet you'd probably have your profile set to private/friends only anyways and it can't index it at that point even if I left that box checked. There is so much facebook conspiracy theory going on right now, artificial drama over nothing.

a little info on how it works, it's not facebook that does the indexing, its the search engines, because that is their job and service that they provide when looking for relevant content.

furthermore, click on settings > privacy settings: and right at the top they address this rumor.

There have been misleading rumors recently about Facebook indexing all your information on Google. This is not true. Facebook created public search listings in 2007 to enable people to search for your name and see a link to your Facebook profile.
also, they automatically opt minors out of the indexing.

so tired of this bullshit fueled by ignorance and conspiracy theorists.

Do make sure you go through the applications settings. The way it is by default, if your friends use applications, some of your information can be given to third-party companies.
And I don't think it's that off-base to be a little paranoid about facebook, Shauk. With their new "policy change," they switched some of my previous privacy settings to their new ones, which I did not appreciate at all.
I'm not gonna create angry blog posts about it all over the net, but I'll tell a couple friends to make sure they're aware of what's shared and what's not.

It's important to keep on top of your privacy settings, but I'm not sure how your settings got switched. Facebook prompted every user with a privacy update, giving you the option to use your old settings, or use their recommended (and more open) settings. By default, this dialog started with your old settings selected for every option. Unless you specifically chose to switch to their recommended settings, your privacy settings should have remained the same.

I never understood the "worried about my personal privacy on the internet." Where there's a will, there's a way. Where there's a loophole, someone will be there. I think the best policy is to avoid putting things up that you fear someone else getting a hold of.

A friend of mine linked to the article Facebook's Great Betrayal - Facebook - Gawker. I don't really get it. The settings seemed pretty clear to me, I set what I wanted to be crawlable and what I wanted hidden.

I agree with Kaliena

I am not too worried about who sees my page, because I keep it pretty bare to begin with - no important information, no revealing pictures, nothing that I wouldn't share with just anybody in the first place
