It's always a pleasure Badnick... 'spark of life' - you know how much I love puns; even better when they mean more in the cntext of relevant scientifics.

I never remember anything (on time).

Ever wondered what lightning strikes really looked like? Tom Warner recently
captured some incredible footage in Rapid City, South Dakota. He captured over
9,000 images per second and this 1.5 minute video lasts only 2 seconds in real time!

(date and time of the storm are stamped within the video. Location: above)

Storm Clouds, South Dakota ; Photography by Patrick Kelley.

author's comments:
“Large powerful storms can be nearly a daily occurrence during the summer
months on the South Dakota plains. This one felt very mysterious as it filled
the sky with dark, heavy clouds and thunder that shook the ground.
It was as if two worlds were colliding.”

Lightning Storm, Kentucky ; Photography by Jason Whitman.

author's comments:
One of several images I took on April 19th, 2009, in Christian County, Kentucky.
The day was filled with rotations and wonderful lightning storms.
The series of storms rolled on for about three days.

TOTALLY UNEXPECTED

author's comments:
Well I started my night at Leavenworth, Kansas around 830pm. The clouds were incredible! I had to shoot them with a higher iso and only a couple second shutter so they would not blur. I stopped at four other spots, staying ahead of the storm the whole time. My last stop was here in Lenexa. I thought it would be cool if I got a strike with this excavator. The strikes were few and far between but I decided to go for it anyway. Then out of nowhere comes this strike! The only one I took from this spot! See the shorter strike in the middle from the cloud to ground? THAT is what I was shooting for! That height!

{Shot with a Nikon d90 on Tuesday September 21, 2010 in Lenexa, KS.}

A “tentacle” of lightning stretches over Japan in a long-exposure picture taken
Thursday (Jan. 27, 2011) of the ash plume rising from Shinmoedake peak, one of
the calderas of the Kirishima volcano complex. Shinmoedake began erupting
Wednesday, coating nearby villages and farms with ash and prompting authorities
to ask for voluntary evacuations within a 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) radius.

Lightning Chaos by Fringe Focus

author's comments: (Rob Loukotka)
Crazy storm in Chicago, not too much rain, but tons of intense lightning.

This was shot with a tripod, with 4-5 second exposures. For every 20 shots of empty sky,
there'd be one with kickass lightning. Color was changed in post to feel more like Batman.

Beside the lake of my soul, I stand

Watching…
Waiting…
Anticipating…

The wind cuts and rain slashes,
Lightning blinds and thunder crashes.

Dark is the night, with a soft red glow,
Until jagged lines of light, make clouds a rainbow.

Raindrops fall from the sky like knives,
Tearing flesh and exposing lies.

The wind cries for those without tears,
Lamenting the lost fountain of years.

By the lake of my soul, I stand in fright,
But my spirit sours with the beauty of the night.

We scream in silence dreading the end.

Watching…
Waiting…
Anticipating…
