Father Accused Of Eating Child's Eyes Out

Quote:

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- "It was pretty bizarre," said neighbor Ramon Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was one of the first to discover 34-year-old Angelo Mendoza on April 28 after police said Mendoza bit an eyeball out of his 4-year-old son's face and ate it.

"The guy was crazy. Real bug-eyed; he had to be on drugs," said Rodriguez.

Court documents said neighbors checked on Mendoza's son, Angelo Jr., after they noticed the father acting nervously and fleeing from his east Bakersfield apartment in his wheelchair. Inside, they found little Angelo naked and bleeding. Police said the boy had numerous bites to his hands and his eyes were swollen shut. Doctors said the boy's left eye and muscle were completely missing. His other eye was mutilated beyond repair. The boy told them, "My daddy ate my eyes out." Rodriguez said meanwhile Mendoza approached him at a neighbor's vacant house down the street.

Rodriguez said the boy's father wheeled himself into the front yard and asked Rodriguez to play with him and a pet dog. He was wearing boxers and a sweater. When Rodriguez refused, Mendoza got off his wheelchair and dragged himself into a back yard, where he found an ax.

By then Mendoza had stripped naked. He chained himself to a tree in the back yard and began hacking at his leg with a pickax while yelling incoherently.

"He told me to look into the sun and pray with him. I was kinda scared for a minute," said Rodriguez.

Then Rodriguez jumped on Mendoza and wrestled the ax away.

"As soon as I grabbed the ax he tried to bite me, and I had to hold him down with my knee. There was dry blood around his mouth. I don't know if it was his own, but I'm pretty sure it was his son's now that I hear the story," said Rodriguez.

The police report said Mendoza appeared to be under the influence of PCP. Rodriguez said had he known about little Angelo, the outcome would have been different.

"I would've just let him cut his leg off. What happened to his son is not right. I would've left him alone," said Rodriguez.

Mendoza was arrested on charges of torture, aggravated mayhem, and cruelty to a child. The toddler is now in the custody of Child Protective Services. Mendoza is due in court May 20. His bail is set at $1 million.

PCP has its reputation for causing this type of dissociative- psychotic behavior.

Phencyclidine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I was lucky I only harmed myself,
back in 1974.

It must have been in the pot I had at a party.
I ended up doing a back dive onto the pavement, and then
rolling down a canyon full of cactus. ( so my best friend in 9th grade told me)

I had no recall of that part of the evening.

It could happen to anyone.

What a horrible thing, for this child, this man, and all involved.

That's PCP! Phencyclidine. Angel dust! You ever seen what this stuff does to kids? You're looking at 3 to 5 mandatory... Louis!

I had the same thing happen to me at a party when I was 16.

Someone had a joint spiked with PCP. I don't remember anything that happened. I was told later that they had to hold me down to keep me from flying out a window. It's very scary stuff. I never hung around those people again.

Now that's not mine! I've never seen that before in my life!

Does anyone else here feel absolutely horrible for that child?

I was recently at a wedding and a guy who we carried to the hotel room who was passed out started freaking out when he got to the room and woke up, hallucinating and wanted to kill everyone around him. I wonder if someone slipped some PCP into something he had.

How could anyone not? What goes through a four year old's mind as his father eats his eyes out?
I just cannot imagine.

oh i went a party just the other night, i tried a new drug it was really alright. i asked a friend what it could be. he said "the kids call it PCP"

if you wanna be hip take my advice. try pcp you'll never think twice. if you want yer best buzz this stuffs a must! i payed the devil for angels dust.

but seriously, no child deserves that shit. ive noticed a spike in adult on child crime lately. seems like every week another kid "goes missing" or a body is found.

genuinegirly 05-25-2009 04:54 AM

How will the child recover from such brutality?

Tully Mars 05-25-2009 05:26 AM

I doubt they ever recover. They get older and become abusers themselves and the cycle continues. How sad.

genuinegirly 05-25-2009 05:27 AM

You think they will become abusers themselves? The logic seems to flow, as humans model the behavior we observe. But are there statistics that support this claim?

LoganSnake 05-25-2009 07:59 AM

There are plenty of abusers, serial killers, molesters, etc. that have experienced childhood abuse. Hell, that woman in the story I posted who killed her child twice was abused and did it so that her child did not experience the same fate.

SSJTWIZTA 05-25-2009 03:55 PM

hm, people are strange. you never know, the kid could grow up to become a good person, never thinking about doing such things because he's experienced whats its like to be a victim.

cameroncrazy822 05-26-2009 06:47 AM

WTF??? Drugs are drugs and I know but for them this would not have happened. Where do we draw the line in prosecuting these nuts? Addiction then treatment vs. prison/ punishment?? This child has been maimed by this freak and as far as I'm concerned should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. An eye for an eye (no pun intended whatsoever)... have someone do that to him (punishment) and then treat him for addiction. I know it's not a viable suggestion but I think it's equitable for all concerned. Maybe not though.....

shakran 05-26-2009 07:36 AM

The kid's young enough that if he lands with the right adoptive parents, he should be fairly OK, psychologically. Trouble is, not many adoptive parents are looking for an abused kid who's eyes have been eaten by his dad. They want the "perfect little angel" stereotype.

wooÐs 06-01-2009 06:24 AM

Wow, that's pretty horrible.

I'd dig it up but it will more than likely offend others. But is anyone familiar with that one pic floating around of the man who sliced off chunks of his face and fed them to his dog? He was under the influence of angel dust as well. Dude actually survived. But there was NO face left at all. Just 'meat' and skull. Freakin' sick.

lagoonguy 06-05-2009 10:29 AM
