How Much Sugar??
I was just shown this site. SUGAR STACKS.
It provides a visual representation of just how much sugar is in some of your favourite foods and beverages. It does so by stacking sugar cubes equivalent to the amounts found in each item. I don't know about you but I was a tad surprised just how much sugar is in some of these things... I know there are some Jamba Juice fans on the board: Anything surprise you?

Whoa. I'm surprised by the yogurt.
And really glad that there isn't anything you pictured above that I actually eat. Due to lactose issues, I have to do the fat-free, aspartame yogurt and I'm slowly adding Coke Zero on the days that I don't make coffee in the morning. I'm almost afraid to check out the site!

This is my guilty pleasure (no wonder I like them so much):

It's kind of misleading to portray something like a Jamba Juice smoothie being nothing but sugar; if you pick the right one, it's also nutritionally dense. As they note on the website, they're not differentiating between the kinds of sugar, and it appears they're not differentiating between nutritionally dense foods and those that are empty calories.
There's a vast difference between a Protein Berry Workout (my favorite) and Baraka's favorite Blizzard. However, there are plenty of bad choices on their menu too. Sorry, I have nutrition on the brain...I've been working on a project for my class all morning!

Yeah, the biggest difference is that my favourite is far more delicious!

Is that added sugar? Or is that total sugars, i.e. simple carbohydrates?
Like, the strawberry yogurt shows 6.5 cubes of sugar. But how much of that is due to added sugar (e.g. high fructose corn syrup), and how much of that (if any) is due to the natural sugars found in the milk product and in the bits of fruit? Last edited by Cynosure; 05-04-2009 at 02:27 PM.. |

I drink my coffee black, no sugar, and I probably drink more coffee than water, or anything else. But I'm not too worried about the other ones. I always knew Coke had a huge amount of sugar, it won't stop me. Still, a nice way to see it and realize.
And about yogurt, I'm sorry, but most yogurt in USA is disgusting. They add a huge amount of color, sugars, artificial flavor. Real yogurt can be quite delicious, and a nice late night refreshing treat. I miss the yogurt and "fromage blanc" from France (and most other foods from there as well). One day I'll go back.
