Warning sought for burger the size of your head

Yes, that's the headline for this article:

Quote:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The staff dietitian at a doctors group is asking the West Michigan Whitecaps to put a warning label on the enormous new hamburger that it's selling this season. Susan Levin of the Washington-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine sent a letter to the Grand Rapids minor-league team on Tuesday. She's asking that the 4,800-calorie burger be labeled a "dietary disaster" that increases the risk of cancer and heart disease.

The 4-pound, $20 burger features five beef patties, five slices of cheese, nearly a cup of chili and liberal doses of salsa and corn chips — all on an 8-inch bun.

Whitecaps spokesman Mickey Graham said the team hasn't considered labeling the burger, which he says is a gimmick being promoted as a very unhealthy menu item.
4800 calories!!!! I can't even imagine a single serving that dense!

Just so you know, 4,800 calories is the daily intake of some marathoners and professional bodybuilders.

Extreme food that looks at quantity is starting to get old in my book. There are other avenues of extremity in food that are more interesting to me.

However, what's interesting here is that a warning label was actually recommended for this. That's actually kind of funny. Like it needs a label. :)

Weird because the FDA rules for labeling are very clear as to when you require a label on foods with nutritional information. Recently the city of NY decided that food companies with more and 15 branches and was upheld by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

Quote:

Food Law Blog (US): NYC Menu Calorie Labeling Requirement Upheld
New York City requires all menu boards and menus in chain restaurants with 15 or more establishments nationally to bear calorie content information for each menu item. The New York State Restaurant Association challenged this regulations, but the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected the challenge both on federal preemption and First Amendment grounds.

The appellate court held that the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA), “does not regulate nutrition information labeling on restaurant food, and states and localities are free to adopt their own rules. The NLEA, however, does generally regulate nutrition content claims on restaurant foods, and states and localities may only adopt rules that are identical to those provided in the NLEA.”

Cyn, "like it needs a label" was more about labelling the obvious vs. following law. It's like the labelling on certain appliances: "Do not submerge in water!" and on those little silica gel packets that keep things fresh: "Do not eat!"

And a warning label isn't the same as a nutrition label.

That burger would be an appetizer, for the almighty GH.

All I gotta say is if my restaurant was selling something that massive, I'd love to have some big FDA or whoever step in and tell me I had to put a warning on it. Think of the promotions you could run.. SO BIG THE FDA MADE US PUT A WARNING STICKER ON IT!

It's absurd though, Anyone with a brain can see that thing isn't supposed to be eaten by one person.
