the latest im hearing is that the reporter was kidnapped by militants a while back, and when he was released was interogated by either the iraqis and/or americans and that he's bitter about it.
that and losing family members in the war. who wouldnt be pissed. i know that many americans would like to do a lot worse than throw their shoes at Dubya. in saying that though. he's a foreign dignatory. show some respect. i wonder what would have happened if he actually connected. it think it would have been a lot worse for the journalist. what do you guys think? on a lighter note...coincidentally, both shots hit the american flag. hal - in 3 months time he'll be playing for the dodgers.

Hey guys we're getting off topic here. How about we start posting these games/clips in "found on net" and reserve this thread for actual discussion.

Eh, at the end of the day Im sure that President Bush had a good laugh, downed two fingers of expensive double malt, banged his MILFish wife and dreamt about whatever it is that powerful men dream about. al-Zaidi probably laid on a dungeon floor naked and hog-tied, bloody, broken and bruised and prayed for deaths sweet release.
Hope it was worth it, fuckface.

like it or not, walter, this is a significant symbolic action.
it is a little piece of theater that indicates something of the damage that the bush administration has done, not only to the credibility of his administration but also to the credibility of the united states. everything about it is a reflection of that damage--that it happened at all is a reflection of it. to be clear, because you've not been part of the collective for that long, i opposed the iraq war from the outset--but i take no pleasure in this sort of thing, in the fact that it happened, because it is the same damage that, to my mind, is fundamental to the economic disasters we collectively now are living through, and these disasters function to deepen the damage.

I found the Iraqi Ambassador's comments on this subject interesting and thought-provoking. Apparently some Code Pink people were holding up signs to free the shoe-thrower, and it prompted this exchange:
What resonated with me were his comments about this incident being the "fruits of freedom" - and his contrast that alluded to a much different outcome had it been Saddam (sp?) who had the shoes thrown at him. |

Also thanks, Byrnison for that. I really like the way the Iraqi Ambassador addressed the situation.

I agree about the "fruits of freedom"
I would only add that the fruit is sweetest when it is achieved through self-sacrifice and a commitment to the cause by the population of a nation rather than through invasion and occupation, which has unintended (but not unanticipated) consequences. In this case, the consequences for the US were expressed in the act by the reporter and the thousands (or millions) of Muslims who support it. And if we just brush it off in the name of the fruits of freedom, we are turning a blind eye to a signficiant problem....the worst image of the US in the Middle East in decades as a result of our actions in Iraq, our actions at Gitmo, etc.
