the latest im hearing is that the reporter was kidnapped by militants a while back, and when he was released was interogated by either the iraqis and/or americans and that he's bitter about it.

that and losing family members in the war. who wouldnt be pissed.

i know that many americans would like to do a lot worse than throw their shoes at Dubya.

in saying that though. he's a foreign dignatory. show some respect.

i wonder what would have happened if he actually connected. it think it would have been a lot worse for the journalist. what do you guys think?

on a lighter note...coincidentally, both shots hit the american flag.

hal - in 3 months time he'll be playing for the dodgers.

Touché

This just in the administration has created new security measures. Americans are no longer allowed to wear shoes in public. The administration has aptly named this as the no-longer-have-to-remove-shoes-at-the-airport act of 2008.

Rejoice!

I cant make it out clearly, but it seems like Bush has a smile on his face.

Hey guys we're getting off topic here. How about we start posting these games/clips in "found on net" and reserve this thread for actual discussion.

Destrox 12-17-2008 08:29 AM

Found the extra edited items far more on topic than the thread.

Love it.

Bush found it comical.

Tully Mars 12-17-2008 09:27 AM

Gez, talk about a dumb post. THIS IS THE FOUND ON NET THREAD, disregard the sleepy/ignorant moderator and carry on with your posts.

sure..i'd offer my daughter to an erratic journalist. who wouldnt?!

Egyptian man offers daughter to Bush shoe thrower Muntazer al-Zaidi | World Breaking News | News.com.au

AN Egyptian man is offering his 20-year-old daughter in marriage to Iraqi journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi, who threw his shoes at US President George W. Bush.
Saad Gumaa said he had called Dergham, al-Zaidi's brother, to tell him of the offer.

"I find nothing more valuable than my daughter to offer to him, and I am prepared to provide her with everything needed for marriage," Mr Gumaa said.

His daughter, Amal Saad Gumaa, said she agreed with the idea.

"This is something that would honour me. I would like to live in Iraq, especially if I were attached to this hero," she said.

Al-Zaidi's gesture has struck a chord across the Arab world, where Mr Bush is widely despised for invading Iraq in 2003 and for his support for Israel.

Amal is a student in the media faculty at Minya University in central Egypt.

Al-Zaidi's response to the proposal was not known.

The reporter was wrestled to the floor after throwing the shoes during a press conference by Mr Bush in Baghdad on Sunday.

The reporter shouted in Arabic: "This is your farewell kiss, you dog''.

In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of deep contempt.

Al-Zaidi is being held for allegedly insulting a foreign leader, a charge that carries a maximum of two years in prison.

The Iraqi Government has branded al-Zaidi's actions as "shameful" and demanded an apology from his employer Al-Baghdadia Television, which in turn was calling for his immediate release from custody.

Eh, at the end of the day Im sure that President Bush had a good laugh, downed two fingers of expensive double malt, banged his MILFish wife and dreamt about whatever it is that powerful men dream about. al-Zaidi probably laid on a dungeon floor naked and hog-tied, bloody, broken and bruised and prayed for deaths sweet release.

Hope it was worth it, fuckface.

I think the larger issue than fuckface is the response of tens of thousands of Iraqis and others across the Middle East who share that man's anger at Bush and, by transference, at America.

roachboy 12-17-2008 04:49 PM

like it or not, walter, this is a significant symbolic action.
it is a little piece of theater that indicates something of the damage that the bush administration has done, not only to the credibility of his administration but also to the credibility of the united states. everything about it is a reflection of that damage--that it happened at all is a reflection of it.

to be clear, because you've not been part of the collective for that long, i opposed the iraq war from the outset--but i take no pleasure in this sort of thing, in the fact that it happened, because it is the same damage that, to my mind, is fundamental to the economic disasters we collectively now are living through, and these disasters function to deepen the damage.

Byrnison 12-17-2008 05:48 PM

I found the Iraqi Ambassador's comments on this subject interesting and thought-provoking. Apparently some Code Pink people were holding up signs to free the shoe-thrower, and it prompted this exchange:

What resonated with me were his comments about this incident being the "fruits of freedom" - and his contrast that alluded to a much different outcome had it been Saddam (sp?) who had the shoes thrown at him.

powerclown 12-17-2008 05:58 PM

Byrnison: Thank you for posting that.

Just so you know, Bush is a recovering alcoholic who hasn't had a drink in 22 years or so. Tens of thousands of al-Zaidi's countrymen are protesting on his behalf and many more applauding him for what he did and I am sure many, many more across the world are doing the same. People feel so much contempt for our country and it's really boiling over.

Also thanks, Byrnison for that. I really like the way the Iraqi Ambassador addressed the situation.

dc_dux 12-17-2008 08:26 PM

I agree about the "fruits of freedom"

I would only add that the fruit is sweetest when it is achieved through self-sacrifice and a commitment to the cause by the population of a nation rather than through invasion and occupation, which has unintended (but not unanticipated) consequences.

In this case, the consequences for the US were expressed in the act by the reporter and the thousands (or millions) of Muslims who support it.

And if we just brush it off in the name of the fruits of freedom, we are turning a blind eye to a signficiant problem....the worst image of the US in the Middle East in decades as a result of our actions in Iraq, our actions at Gitmo, etc.
