Two Marines Disciplined Over Puppy-tossing Video

(CNN) -- The U.S. Marine Corps has disciplined two Marines over a videotape that showed a Marine throwing a puppy over a cliff, the military said Wednesday.

YouTube.com removed the video for violating the Web site's terms of use.

Officials did not specify the role that each man played in the incident, which received international attention after a video of it appeared on YouTube.com March 3.

Lance Cpl. David Motari is being processed for removal for his role, the Marine Corps said, and Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion also has been punished.

The video shows someone throwing a black-and-white puppy off a rocky cliff. The dog makes a yelping sound as it flies through the air.

"That's mean. That was mean," someone off-camera is heard saying.

YouTube removed the video about a day after it was posted, "due to terms of use violation," the site said.

The Marines were quick to condemn the video when it surfaced, calling it "shocking and deplorable."

Marine officials said the disciplinary action followed a thorough investigation, according to a statement that the Marine Corps Base Hawaii released Wednesday.

"The actions seen in the Internet video are contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine and will not be tolerated," the statement said
So, I guess the video was real and the two guys got what they deserved.

Dear Marines,
Hire psychologists to screen men before spending money training and deploying them. It's your responsibility to make sure that only the highest caliber person wears the uniform and the video in question demonstrates a serious failure to recruit stable people and help to maintain good mental health. This goes for you too, Army and Navy. Entrusting the responsibility to protect our country should not be taken lightly.

Sincerely,

BTW, it should be said that the military and former military on TFP are, in my opinion, of the caliber necessary to trust with the safety of our country. I know that they would report behavior like this.

LoganSnake 06-12-2008 07:56 AM

I'm sure many military/ex-military folks have stories they don't talk about.

Willravel 06-12-2008 08:16 AM

The UCMJ requires one to report illegal behavior. If they've got stories like this, it would behoove them to tell someone so that it's less likely to happen again.

LoganSnake 06-12-2008 08:29 AM

There's a concept called Covering Your Own Ass. Say, I was in the middle of nowhere in some desert, bored out of my mind. Lost? I don't know. The two guys I'm with and I see a caravan passing by. To have fun we decide to snipe the legs off of the camels from a nearby hill and watch the panic. Now, why would any of us three ever report that?

Just an example.

These two guys were retarded. Moral issues aside, you just don't let yourself be caught doing something like this, let alone record it on video.

Willravel 06-12-2008 08:42 AM

I'm saying that if your buddy brags to you that he threw a living puppy off a cliff, you tell your CO immediately. People like the two marines in this case are not meant for soldiering, so explaining the situation to whomever you're supposed to report things like this isn't being a rat, it's being responsible.

What makes a good soldier, Will?

again, i´m agreeing with will. this shows some serious mental disturbance and makes me wonder how these people will react when in a combat situation.

LoganSnake 06-12-2008 08:55 AM

Hm, okay.

OooooKay.

So...foist all of the psychos onto the Air Force? ;)

Seriously though. This is fubar. These are not the types of men that I want serving next to me.

I am in the Air Force, have been for the past 18+ years...granted we are WAY different than the Army/Marines...but in my opinion, you want trained killers...you are going to end up this kind of mentality.

YOU, ME, EVERYONE else can't imagine the things those soldiers/marines see, do, experience every single day in Iraq.

I would have to say that as a whole...Marines, Soldiers, Seamen and Airmen are all professional...but you have 130,000 folks serving in a war zone, these things are going to happen.

Jinn 06-12-2008 11:36 AM

I sat for a half-day in a holding cell on Fort Carson with a soldier enroute to Leavenworth for collecting Iraqi civilian noses and ears and wearing them on his necklace. He claimed that he was made the 'fall man', because everyone in his unit, including the CO, were doing it too. He was more pissed that someone had 'ratted him out' than anything else.

I remember him so clearly - his little nametape said "Grover" which seemed so funny to me, because he was nothing like the Grover of Sesame Street fame.

So as far as puppies go? I'm offended, but not terribly. Looks like they got what they deserved.

This is a good example, Jinn. Group think.

Lucifer 06-12-2008 11:53 AM

Using the "everyone else was doing it" excuse is the kind of mentality that let the Holocaust happen. I'm not saying that puppies equals people, but cruelty is cruelty whether it be to people, puppies or camels.

mixedmedia 06-12-2008 11:56 AM

Asshole. Really. What more needs to be said. That he is a Marine is irrelevant.

Stockdale, Will, Will Stockdale

Hey, Ben. Maybe you'll get to like the Air Force. Zoomin' all over the sky - and shouting, "Roger" and "Wilco" and everything. Maybe it won't be so bad.

Bad? You know what they call men in the Air Force?

Air man! Like somethin' out of a dang funny book! Air man! How you gonna like it when somebody calls you "Air man"?

By dog, I just don't think I'll stand for it.

Bill O'Rights 06-12-2008 12:36 PM

No Time For Sergeants 1958.

What do I win Shanni?

ShaniFaye 06-12-2008 12:40 PM

ummmm me? :icare:

Willravel 06-12-2008 01:09 PM

I'm waaay too young to get that reference. No offense to those who did, of course, as with age often comes wisdom.

Sion 06-12-2008 08:56 PM

btw, regardless of these Marines getting punished, I'm still not convinced that the puppy video was real (as in a real puppy). perhaps it was a "conduct unbecoming" charge, in which case maybe it makes no difference whether the puppy was real.
