Yeah, lyrebirds are pretty cool. There's a fairly well-known anecdote about a flautist who had a pet lyrebird which learned to mimic his playing and which he subsequently released into the wild. The story goes that researchers later encountered several other lyrebirds who'd learned to mimic a flute by mimicking the original bird, leading to a population of lyrebirds who were all of a musical bent.

FUN FACT: Although not nearly so prodigious as lyrebirds, crows, ravens and jackdaws (collectively of the family corvidae, and distant cousins of lyrebirds) are also able to mimic sounds from their environment, and have been observed in urban areas repeating car alarms and such.

Very cool. I discovered just how well some birds can imitate the sounds they hear around them when my aunt rescued an African Grey about 10 years ago. He mimics everything from the phone ringing to my Aunt yelling to her kids, announcing that dinner is ready. The first few times Odie got Matt and Tony but when he started announcing dinner @ 8:00 in the morning....

Reminds me of a boss I worked for many years ago. He and his wife had a parrot that did not 'speak' no matter what they tried. So I made an endless loop cassette tape and we recorded "Hey there sweetcheeks" on it and played it nonstop while they were at work. It worked great. I don't recall if they ever recorded anymore as I think they split up shortly afterwards.

This sort of reminds me of the guy who calls a number and tells the people, "I have your parrot here on my patio", they said they had not even listed it as missing yet, how did he get their number? and the parrot is on the patio saying, "you have reached 333-3333, please leave a message and we will..."

Heard a mockingbird once go through about a 20 minute repertoire without repeating itself. Never heard it do a car alarm, but he must've done forty different birdsongs.

i´ve encountered these birds in the wild (mt. dandenong) and it is incredible what they are capable of. they are famous for impersonating car alarms and the like but they are extremely shy and getting near one is no easy feat. normally you can just hear them.
