Myths About The Developing World

I wanted this to spark a discussion elsewhere, but I couldn't accurately decide where to put this video. I suppose I could have put it in General Discussion, but I shall just drop it here because it just might disappear in time.
FYI: This is a small documentary of sorts, which runs about 20 minutes in length.

What really impressed me about dr. Rosling in this video is that he manages to present this information in a way that is both entertaining and easy to understand. He also raises a very valid point; one cannot devise solutions to any problems big or small if one doesn't have the necessary information.

www.gapminder.org, as mentioned in the video. It also has some further reading and videos.

I am more disappointed than surprised about the lackluster reception to this post.

I realize it is a bit long and drab, but I did takes some key knowledge from it. Population, as well as pollution charts are discussed, to the ever-prevalent global climate model. A very interesting informational compendium about how we choose to perceive and evaluate the world culture that surrounds and influences us.

Well done, and likely deserves more attention to warrant it great.

this is a very interesting clip. lots to think about and an entertaining presentation (i particularly like the distribution of wealth comparison of china and the us..china looming over the us like a ghost...)

gapminder is a cool site.

by sense is that the thread title downplays what the op presents in a way...the argument seems more that the idea of a clear, obvious distinction between "developed" and "developing" is a myth. the other main claim--which i think folk really should take seriously--is the uselessness of aggregations for thinking in policy terms--that demonstration happens across the comparison of mortality rates by way of hiv between niger and south africa. policy initiatives have to be "highly contextual" he says, and by "highly contextual" he means that it makes no sense to think in regional terms if the region is simply an abstract container for aggregations.

not sure but that this thread might fare better in politics with a different title.
